Betty endured and overcame hardships early in life. She grew up in uncertain times during the Great Depression, and battled Polio as a teenager, which affected her muscles for the remainder of her life. She was blessed with the love and support of her parents and sisters.
Betty graduated from W. H. Adamson High School in 1947. Betty married Ray Turner on March 19, 1948. They had four daughters, Rita Kay, Diana Lynn, Penny Ann and Brenda Rae. They lived in Dallas, Texas and MacAllen, Texas before moving to Colombia and later Venezuela where Ray worked with an oil company. They later moved back to Dallas, Texas for a few years, while Ray finished his bachelor’s degree.
In 1969 Ray and Betty were appointed to serve as missionaries with the Foreign Mission board of the Southern Baptist Convention, fulfilling the call to missionary service that Betty had felt as a young person. They served for over 15 years with the mission board on two separate occasions. While in Ecuador, Betty worked in the Baptist book deposit and in her local church. She also worked alongside Ray in planting a church in the Ecuadorian town of Nanegal. Betty also had talent working with children, and served as a Bible school teacher for many years. With her nursing training, Betty also assisted volunteer medical teams in Ecuador.
Betty served alongside her husband Ray Turner for over 15 years as a missionary with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention (formerly Foreign Mission Board) in Ecuador, Panama, and other places in the Americas. Betty volunteered her nursing skills at the El Paso Baptist Clinic while Ray served in the financial office of the Baptist Spanish Publishing House.
In between serving as missionaries, the family moved to the Dallas, Fort Worth area in the mid-seventies. During this time, while Ray worked and completed his graduate degree, Betty attended Tarrant County College where she received her Licensed Vocational Nursing certification. She worked as a nurse at Bishop Davies in Bedford, Texas for several years.
Betty had the gift of hospitality. She is remembered by family and friends as a loving friend and mother. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed cooking big, delicious meals and deserts for family and friends. Betty loved family gatherings where she and Ray and her daughters and grandchildren were together. She was a loyal friend and maintained contact with friends she had made in all the places she lived for many years.
Everywhere Betty lived she was active in her local church, especially in the Women’s Missionary Union and Women on Missions. She was an advocate for missions and missionaries even when she was not in active missionary service herself. Betty also served as an ESL teacher for Asian women through her church ministry and volunteered at the Royal haven Baptist Church Mission Center.
Betty was also a gifted artist and used oil painting to capture many places where she lived and traveled. Her family is blessed to have these pictures and even created several annual family calendars, featuring her paintings.
Betty was predeceased by her parents, Aline and Marion Dozier, and by her daughter, Rita Kay Moles.
Betty is survived by her husband of 74 years, Milton Ray and three of her daughters, Diana Lynn Turner, Penny Ann Stamps, and Brenda Rae Turner. She is also survived by her sons-in-law David Casey and Keith Stamps, as well as 3 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild, and by her two sisters Ann Wilmsen and Louise Woods.
