Eulogy:
We are all here today to remember and celebrate Tres. Frank and I thank the family and friends who are with us today at this Graveside Service and those who are watching online. There is no doubt in our minds that many, many others would be here with us if the world were not in such a troubled place today.
My family tells me I was closer to Tres than anyone in the family, and though we texted more than we talked on the phone in recent years, he would end our phone conversations telling me, “it was good to hear your voice, Mom, it calms and centers me.” So maybe what my family says about our relationship is true. However, I would be remiss if I did not say that without a doubt, Elizabeth Hart was closer to him than any of his wide circle of friends, his very best friend in the world for twenty years. She tells me Tres was like family to her; we feel the same way about her.
In these days of grieving, I have written and written about Tres, silly stories from his childhood, his teenage years, and such. I have read and read how people from around the world admired him in various ways. However, I keep returning to the wonderful tribute “Remembering Tres Warren of Psychic Ills” by his record company Sacred Bones, a tribute which touched our family deeply.
Once Tres went away to the University of Texas, he never lived at home again. So, it seems fitting to let Elizabeth and his family of bandmates sing his praises and identify how he left his mark on them and the world.
“It was with the heaviest of hearts that we said goodbye earlier this month to our brother Tres Warren of Psychic Ills. Tres was a part of the Sacred Bones family since the very beginning, and it was our great honor to release some of our favorite records of all time…
At the time of his death, Tres was overflowing with creativity, actively writing new songs, and excited about the next phase of the band. He was preparing to go into the studio alongside his longtime collaborator Elizabeth Hart and their bandmates to record the sixth Psychic Ills full-length, which was supposed to be out this fall…
Tres touched everyone who was lucky enough to know him. Here are a few tributes from people who were a part of his life over the years.
Tres was happiest when he was playing music. Through whatever trials life brought, when he picked up his guitar, he could find calm. He also had a passion for film and impeccable taste. Tres had such respect for storytellers and was an amazing storyteller himself – you can hear that in his music. Maybe what you don’t know is that Tres had a great sense of humor, he could run a joke forever and it never got old. He taught me so much. I’m so grateful to have had such a deep and soulful musical partner for all these years and feel lucky to call Tres my friend. Life won’t be the same without him. - Elizabeth Hart, Psychic Ills
Your encouragement and support sweetly given to me weakens any self-doubt and insecurity. The generosity with your knowledge, passion, and talent is a fire lightning motivator. Your mischievous, playful, sometimes biting but always familial wisecracking keeps me smiling and laughing. I can neither count the refractions nor express how mesmerizing the light was while passing through. I love you, Tres.
And also, my amp on stage isn’t too loud. – Brent Cordero, Psychic Ills
One of my favorite qualities of Tres Warren was his ability to ask your opinion of something and GENUINELY listen to your response with full attention and consideration. His knowledge and thirst for music was as unparalleled as his innate kindness, which was apparent to anybody that knew him. His tone on guitar was unmistakably him, which was tantamount to his musical brilliance. Drifting back on the memories we shared throughout unforgettable tours across the planet it shows me he was one of those special people in life. One that you seldomly have the chance to meet, that continually inspire you and make you a better version of yourself. What an honor to know him. On that note I’ll cheers a margarita to you Tres. See you again someday amigo. – Jon ‘Catfish’ DeLorme, Psychic Ills
I was lucky enough to play music with Tres. He was a master songwriter and musicologist. He was a sensitive soul and magic maker who inspired so many people. I feel fortunate that he included me in his world. – Adam Amram, Psychic Ills
Tres had this unflappable presence. He was so calm and cool it could be intimidating but once approached you were met with nothing but a gentle warmth and kindness. He was very generous with his cool. Above all else though, he was a lover of music. I mean the guy just loved music. He loved listening to it, he loved talking about it and more than anything he loved creating it. He was generous with his music. For that I will be forever grateful. – Caleb Braaten, Sacred Bones Records
Goodbye, Tres. We love you. - Sacred Bones Records”
What more could a mom and dad want…to have a son who went out into the world, who treated others well with gentle warmth and kindness, encouragement and support, and generosity; who listened to others and considered their views; who inspired others to be a better version of themselves; who had a great sense of humor, mischievous and playful, wisecracking, smiling and laughing with others and making them smile and laugh too; who was at the same time a deep and sensitive soul, who in some situations could be brought to tears easily; who found his passion in music and pursued it intentionally and relentlessly, sometimes at great risk and sacrifice – loved music, loved to talk about it, write it, create it, play it, perform it.
Our beautiful boy…We’re so proud.
