Freddie Thomas Brooks was born on July 5, 1948, a Monday, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Ernest “EJ” and Delores Cato Brooks. He grew up in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford area with his younger brother, Michael.
As a young boy, Fred enjoyed hanging at Hurst Bowl with his friends who shared his interest in bowling. These are guys that he built a lifelong relationship with. In his adult years he continued his passion by bowling in a traveling league and playing baseball for the Lewisville YMCA.
Fred met the love of his life Katherine Jean Morales in 1971. They were married the following year at Haltom City Assembly of God Church on June 16. Pastor A. E. Whitworth officiated the ceremony with Fred’s lifetime friend Johnny Hill serving as best man and Kathy’s lifelong friend Sue Brown as bridesmaid.
In 1972, Fred began his employment with Sears and Roebuck, where he remained a dedicated and loyal employee for more than 30 years, working in different positions and locations in management for the Service Center division. Fred knew the meaning of life and learned from the experiences and trials that were set before him. He was able to analyze situations and problems, keeping everything and everyone on track. He was indeed a born leader who loved mentoring others.
One of Fred’s most endearing qualities was his uncanny ability to remember birthdays, anniversaries and other important dates, and his unending enthusiasm for sending cards to his family and friends for all their special occasions.
After retiring Fred continued to lead a full and rich life; volunteering 11 years for Vitas Hospices and was named volunteer of the year in 2014. He was a faithful member of Abundant Life Church where he participated in various church groups. Fred was a strong supporter of the Republican Party.
For over 20 years, he loved being on his houseboat and enjoyed the camaraderie with his Lake Murray friends that he called family. When the time came to build a new houseboat and the name was challenging, Fred came up with the name “Determination", which was a perfect name because that’s how he took on his battle with cancer, he fought with determination and a "just won’t give up" attitude.
Monday, October 20, 2014, at 11:15 p.m., at his home in Trophy Club, Texas, Fred’s spirit was returned to GOD, free from pain and suffering. He was greeted by his father “EJ” and brother Michael. Left with a broken heart is his loving wife, Kathy; his mother, Delores Dunn; stepbrother, Gary Oliver; sisters-in-law, LaNell Langley, Martha Jackson, Ruby Morales, Ann Hansen, Pam Fuller and Bonnie Brooks; numerous nieces and nephews with whom he had a very close and special relationships; and his extended Lake Murray family.
Fred's body was laid to rest at Rose Hill Cemetery (Dawn Section 20) located in Handley, Texas, on Friday, October 24, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. and a memorial service celebrating his life was held the following Monday, October 27, 2014, at 10:00 a.m., at Abundant Life Church in Grapevine, Texas. The memorial service was officiated by: Pastor John Bullard, Pastor John Cruz, Pastor Doyce Clark and Jimmy Eskew.
To all of our wonderful family and friends who provided loving care, we offer recognition and gratitude. A big thank you to Dr. Stephen Richey and the staff at Texas Oncology for the added time you gave to this amazing man.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me. ~ II Timothy 4th Chapter ~
