Gene was born in Houston, Texas on November 23, 1934, to Wendell Davis Faulkner and wife Bertha Olivia Dugger. Gene was preceded in death by his older brothers Wendell Faulkner of Pecos, Texas and Joe Faulkner of Beeville, Texas. His is survived by his brother Royce Faulkner and wife Donna of Austin, Texas, and sister-in-law Janet Faulkner of Austin, Texas.
Gene was raised in Austin, Texas where he graduated from Austin High School. He earned a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1959. Gene was a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Texas. He also served his country in the 49th Armored Division of the National Guard.
Gene married Mary Dickerson in College Park, Georgia in 1963, and for the past 54 years, they have enjoyed a full and fruitful life blessed by children, family, and friends. Gene was an avid sports fan, especially when games involved his beloved Texas Longhorns. Gene also shared a love for the outdoors where he hunted deer with his brothers, nephews, and children throughout the years. Gene and Mary also enjoyed traveling together, and experienced adventures both at home and abroad.
Most importantly, Gene’s life was completed through the love and relationships that he shared with his children: son Todd Faulkner of Richmond, Virginia, daughter Mollie and husband Jim Morgan of Fort Worth; and grandchildren Ryan, Kate, Olivia, and Cara Faulkner of Richmond Virginia, and Averie Morgan of Fort Worth, Texas.
Gene had a distinguished 30-year career with the Federal Aviation Administration. He worked in FAA offices located in Miami, Houston, Albuquerque, and Fort Worth before retiring in 1989 as the leader of the Airports Division responsible for the Southwest Region that encompassed Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas. Gene managed the FAA's financial program assisting airports with planning and development work that resulted in enhanced airport safety, security, and capacity for the public. Gene worked on several notable projects including the establishment of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, FAA guidance in the relocation and development of Austin 's municipal airport to Bergstrom Air Force Base, and the planning, development and FAA involvement in Fort Worth Alliance Airport. Gene was considered a “national resource”, and as a subject matter expert, he was frequently called upon by the FAA Headquarters' office In Washington, DC to serve on committees to develop national policy and guidance for Airport Division personnel. Upon retiring from the FAA, Gene accepted a position with Greiner Engineering and URS corporation where he worked for more than 20 years as a business development professional. In that role, he was successful in obtaining a variety of planning and design contracts on airports located throughout the Nation. Gene was well known and highly respected throughout the aviation industry. He was a mentor to numerous young engineers and professional associates. In the business world, Gene was defined by his principled ethics, his love for people, and his unique dry sense of humor.
Visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Tuesday, February 6th at the Bluebonnet Funeral Home of Colleyville. Services and a reception following will be held at the Bluebonnet Funeral Home in Colleyville Texas on Wednesday, February 7th at 12:30pm. A private family internment will be held afterward. Jim Schierling, former Pastor of Midcities Bible Church that Gene and Mary attended for many years, will preside over the services. Pallbearers will be Wendell Faulkner, Bruce Faulkner, Carroll Faulkner, Doug Faulkner, Brian Faulkner, Tim Ward, Ken Kenvin, and Mike Nicely.
