

Hugh Winston Hamm Sr. of Fort Worth, Texas left this world on in Bedford, Texas. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and coach. He was also known as Poppy to his 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Coach Hugh Hamm was born in Muhlenburg County, Kentucky on February 24,1930 to George Howard Hamm and Susie Idell Hamm. He was one of 9 children. Coach leaves behind 2 sons and daughter in laws, Buddy and wife Janna and Kirk and wife Michelle. Additionally, he has 2 surviving sisters Elnora Scalf & Joyce Reynolds and her husband Woody, along with several nieces and nephews. Most importantly, Hugh Hamm leaves behind his loving wife Jerrye to whom they recently celebrated 71 years of marriage this past November.
Hugh Hamm began his high school career in Keller and moved to Fort Worth where he graduated from Diamond Hill High School. He enjoyed school and loved sports. His coaches said despite being small in stature, he was fearless and worked hard to excel in Football, Basketball, and Boxing. One of his great achievements in college was he won the Golden Gloves in the Novice Welterweight Division in Fort Worth. Additionally, he lettered in football and basketball.
After graduating from college, Coach served in the Air Force, during the Korean war era. Toward the end of his basic training in Cheyenne Wyoming, he and Jerrye were married on November 4, 1951. They were stationed in England during his time in the service.
Upon returning back to the states, Hugh Hamm completed his master’s degree at North Texas State in education. His first job as a teacher and coach was in Big Springs, Texas. After 2 years, he moved his family back to the Dallas/Fort Worth area where he taught and coached at Carrollton, Hurst L.D. Bell High School, and Richland High School. He retired after 37 years of service.
One of the great accomplishments in Coach Hamm’s career was his success as a track coach at Richland High School. His track teams won over 10 district team titles. Additionally, he was blessed to have coached 2 individual state champions. Coach Hamm was inducted into the Birdville Hall of Honor in 2009. This past year, the track area on Richland High School campus was named the Hamm-Hudson Track and Field Complex. Coach Hamm felt blessed to be able to share the dedication with former girls track coach, Kathy Hudson.
Coach Hamm was an avid golfer and additionally he worked approximately 20 years at Willow Springs Golf Course in the Pro Shop. Coach Hamm will be remembered as a man who loved people and always looked for the best in those he came into contact with.
In lieu of flowers, Coach Hamm family would appreciate donations to the Birdville ISD Athletic Hall of Honor.
