He was born in Dallas, Texas on September 7, 1963 and is preceded in death by his parents, James B. Ellison and Edith Calderon Ellison, his brother-in-law Kim Cochran, and his beloved daughter, Carley Jeanne Ellison.
As a teenager, he was a Boy Scout, earned a brown belt in karate, and was surprisingly adept with nunchucks. For a few years he also loved to play his electric guitar, to the still resonating earache of his siblings. He graduated with honors from Jesuit Preparatory School of Dallas, then attended University of Texas at Austin graduating with a degree in Economics and Finance, minoring in Classics. He was a brother of the Kappa Sigma Tao fraternity. When he wasn’t working at the shoe store selling women’s pumps to put himself through school, he could often be found out on the green playing frisbee golf.
Ike cut a commanding and unforgettable figure throughout his lengthy, successful and hugely impactful career in healthcare technology. He was most proud of, and perhaps best known for his long tenure at NextGen Healthcare, a pioneer and visionary leader in automating the physician/hospital workplace. Ike was “there at the beginning” and helped shepherd the revolution in electronic health records. Known throughout the industry equally for his product knowledge, salesmanship, camaraderie and casual yet impeccably coordinated attire, Ike truly made a difference at a turning point in the business of healthcare – and amongst the myriad friends and colleagues he encountered along the way.
Ike was devoted to his son Hunter and very involved in improving Hunter’s educational environment and active on the board at Hunter’s schools.
Generous and caring, Ike donated to multiple charities.
As an adult, Ike had a passion for tennis and a mostly-hate relationship with golf, and even when perspiring he looked the epitome of cool. There are many divoted fairways and broken clubs that provide silent testimony to Ike’s prowess on the links.
Ike always had a great sense of humor, albeit dark at times. His laugh was infectious and his eyes sparkled in a lovingly devious way.
Ike is survived by his son Hunter; his brother Maurice Ellison and wife Barbara, their children Reece, Marshall, Hudson and Cora; his sister Harriet Cochran and her two daughters, Aria Alexandra and Gwendolyn Cochran; and his sister Maria Ellison Curtis and her two daughters, Ashley and Claudia Curtis.
We know you are now with your little queen, Carley. Rest in Peace, Ike.
