I remember John joining us at MeetUp for the first time at Mary's Outpost. Hard to believe he was fairly quiet and reserve the first couple of times there, and a bit nervous the first couple of times he sang...boy did that change.

I don't know that I have ever met anyone with his love of life and sense of humor (except maybe my own husband, rest his soul). He was always the jokester and empathetic one. Always fun to be around.

He really seemed complete when he met the love of his life, Cathy. They made a wonderful and fun team and loving couple. I know how difficult this will be for her.

John, you will truly be missed by all.

Although I never had the privilege of meeting John, the pictures I saw of him always reflected a beautiful smile, especially those with Cathy.
I have known Cathy most of her life . She comes from a family of strong Christian women. Just know I love you and your sweet family.John had to be wonderful, he picked you.

John Thornton was truly a great friend to myself and all around him. For a good decade, beginning in both our Sushi & Karaoke groups, we had truly built a website gallery full of memories.  Surely also, as a favorite Arlington Organizer on Meetup, he was always reaching out with his wife Kathy (whom he met onsite) to create and participate in so many memorable events.  

Last night at John Bs, a favorite Meetup of ours, really resounded his influence there.  Basically everyone in attendance, including Bob Bowen, Clayton White, James Taylor, Betty Bowen and myself spent the entire evening literally singing his praises. 

He will definitely be missed. 

I am a member of Around Arlington. This group was so helpful to me.  Newly widowed and new to the area this group helped me explore.  Thank you for starting the group.  God bless you all

It was always a delight to run into John around the office.  He was a genuinely nice guy with such a cheerful personality.  I'm really sorry I never had a chance to hear him sing.
Losing him has been a shock to us here; I can't imagine the effect it had on those who knew him best but I hope his family and close friends can find some comfort in knowing he was so well liked and respected at work.

I've had the privilege of working with Mr.  Thornton since 2000 when he came to the agency.  He will be missed.

To John’s wife Ms. Thornton and the entire family, may it encourage your hearts to know you all are in my thoughts and prayers and that God’s presence is abiding with you to comfort, encourage and give you the strength you need during your time of sorrow and healing.

To the family of John I have worked with John the twelve years that I have been with HHSC formerly known as DADS. I remember our conversations about different movies that were coming out and his marathons that he had ran and telling me about his mom. John had a kind heart and a good spirit. I will miss seeing John filling up the copy machine every morning and that voice over the intercom when he pages someone. I always told him that he sounded like the voice when you call to get times for the movie showings. 

Just know that God was ready for one of his angels to come home. You will be in my continued pray for strength and peace during this difficult time.

ABOUT 9 YEARS AGO, I MET JOHN AT THE HOLIDAY INN KARAOKE GROUP.  WE DANCED, HE WAS FUNNY, ALWAYS JOKING,  HE , MY HUBBY CHRIS  AND SO MANY OF US CONTIUED TO MANY KARAOKE SPOTS TO HAVE FUN, DANCE, SING,..HE WAS SUCH A FUNNY GUY.  WHAT A MEMORYHE HAD FOR TELLING STORIES..HE COULD ENGAGE YOU FOR HOURS AS HE DID RECENTLY AT GATHERINGS . JOHN FELL IN LOVE WITH CATHY AT THE KTICHEN KARAOKE GROUP, THEY DATED, SHE FINALLY FOUND"THE ONE" AFTER 21 YEARS..THEIR EYES SPARKLED, THEY DATED, AND WERE MARRIED 16 MONTHS AGO. I SANG AT THEIR WEDDING..HER SONG CHOICE WAS "AT LAST"  THE LYRICS FIT THEM SO WELL.  JOHN AND CATHY  HAD COME TO POOL PARTIES, COWBOY GAME GATHERINGS, KARAOKE AT MY HOME AND WE ALL MET AT SEVERAL VENUES, FRIENDSHIPS GREW.  THIS MAN HAD A HEART OF GOLD, SO FUN, SO HAPPY, ESPECIALLY AFTER MEETING AND MARRYING THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE, CATHY.  THEY WERE ADVID SINGERS, CYCLIST, LIFE PARTNERS.SO IN LOVE. THEY HAD ALOVE FOR TRAVEL,  DESTIN BEACH,CYCLING MEETUPS WERE AN ABSOLUTE PASSION..CATHY BY HIS SIDE.  JOHN WAS A TRI-ATHELETE IN  YOUNGER YEARS..LOVE FOR THE OUTDOORS, CYCLING HIS POASSION  MAKING FRIENDS ALONG THE WAY IN CYCLIST GROUPS.  HE WAS ON HIS WAY TO CYCLE IN FORT WORTH WHEN HE PASSED.  EVERY TEAR YOU SHED WILL BE A LITTLE GIFT FROM  THE HEART..TREASURED MEMORIES..FOR WHEN YOU THINK OF JOHN, A TEAR WILL COME AND SMILE KNOWING THAT IT IS A GOD GIVEN GIFT TO LET GO....TEARS ARE GOOD..THEY REFLECT BITS AND PIECES OF MEMEORIES OF HIM...MEMEORIES ARE THE TREASURES OF LIFE..THEY ARE IN THE HEART...YES, HE WILL BE SO MISSED, HIS LAUGHTER, HIS JOKES, ON FACEBOOK HE WOULD HAVE ALOT OF GOOFY PICTURES, THAT BROUGHT SMILES..ALWASY POSITIVE GOOD MORNING TO YA TYPE, HUMPDAY, WELLNESS WEDNESDAYS,  FRIDAYS WERE THE GLORY DAYS,  THE WEEKEND FUN BEGINS...ALWAYS A FUN PERSON..I HAVE TREASURED MEMORIES FOREVER ..WHAT A GIFT FROM THIS FRIEND FOR LIFE.

I worked with John at HHSC for the last 3 years. When he found out I was Irish and my birthday was on St. Patrick’s Day, he was so excited. We talked about all the Irish festivals and bands we experienced. He even gave me a patch with the Irish flag. He kept me up to date on the local bands he thought I’d like. All he ever wanted was to make you smile and maybe even laugh.  

I worked with John for a number of years at the Texas Dept of Aging and Disability Services in Arlington before I retired 5 years ago.  He was so friendly and always helpful. He always enjoyed talking about his running and marathons he participated in.  During one of those marathons, I told him I had seen him interviewed on TV. That thrilled him so much that someone actually saw him on TV and we would reminisce about that frequently.  I'm so sorry for your loss and hope you find comfort in the memories.

I worked with John and when I purchased my bicycle and began riding he gave me great advice and encouragement.  At times, I was frustrated because the longer distances were difficult for me but he kept encouraging me.  Last year I took my bicycle to the Grand Canyon and rode it all the way down the south rim.  

Joe and I met John and Cathy at the Texan Kitchen for karaoke.  As we got to know them, we fell in love with them. They were such a happy couple and as we moved to Mansfield for our karaoke group, we looked forward to seeing them because they always were excited to be with everyone. John had such a great unique voice that was always fun to hear.

When my husband had to go to a rehab center, he woke up and John was sitting next to him. He had waited over an hour to see how Joe was. That is the kind of friend John was.  He was a gentle soul.

We met John and Cathy at Texan Kitchen karaoke. We all became part of the "Kitchen karaoke family". What a great family it is. John loved to have fun. I remember the little dance he would do when he sang "Great Balls Of Fire". John was so loved by everyone that knew him. Our prayers are for Cathy and his family and the multitude of friends he had. We are certainly gonna miss him. Rest in peace John. 

John was a genuinely nice guy. He was easy to talk to and fun to be around. I knew John from may Meetup events. He was also one of our Karaoke crew. I think of him whenever I hear "Great Balls of Fire"
