As I recover from hip replacement surgery, I miss my mom even more.  There is nothing like a mother's touch and smile when you don't feel well.  I often think about how healing her hands were.  She passed away 5 years ago today.

Hello! I am Amy, Lorraine's first and favorite (IMHO) grandchild. My grandmother had the softest skin. It matched her gentle and peaceful demeanor. As a child, when we would spend the night at grandma and grandpa's house, she would run us a bath and put some Avon Skin-So-Soft oil in the water. That aroma has stuck with me to this day! I use it and the lotion even now! We would sleep in the spare room across the hall from her room and never felt scared. She and grandpa were always awake before us, downstairs drinking coffee in the kitchen. She would make the best cinnamon-sugar toast...I still don't know her secret! Affection came easy to grandma. Whether we were just sitting with her or before bed, she would softly stroke our arms or push the hair behind our ear repeatedly, so very lovingly. We'd go to their house for every holiday get together get-together: Grandpa's M-80 firecrackers, grandma's fried noodles on Thanksgiving, and my favorite, the Christmas nibblefood. Most of the holidays involved us dancing and twirling to a polka album in their living room. She kept her house so clean and extremely orderly. The smell of her house was always my favorite! When we'd leave her house, we always looked forward to getting a Hershey's miniature candy bar. Grandma had a never-ceasing faith and love of the Catholic religion. She was always present whenever any grandchild received a sacrament and strongly supported our Catholic upbringing. Even though I am not a practicing Catholic, I do hold the Catholic faith close to my heart. She taught me that food is good and religion is good for the soul! Later in life when I'd visit on my own, she always had the time to visit and really got involved in our conversations. She'd refer to me as "kid" in these conversations which she did with everybody, and I loved it! She was also not afraid to talk about anything to anyone! Grandma has had a profound effect on my life. Her pearls of wisdom will live in my heart forever. I can't imagine what it would have been like without her. She was one strong lady and I can only hope to be half as strong as her! I love you, Grandma!

A memory of Grammy German that’s unforgettable: 

When we all got together as a family over at grandma Vicki’s house, we would laugh soooo hard we would all pee our pants. Grammy also would be curious about how my mom (Leila) could walk in her tall heels. Then she would proceed to put the high heels on and try to walk in them! She was always bringing joy and laughter to the room she was in. I will miss her dearly but she will always be in my heart. I love you Grammy and you finally have your angel wings! Rest In Peace beautiful 😇💋

My mom was a great listener for me.  I probably dumped on her too many of my problems over the years but her support never ceased.  Her perspective about life was lógical and she encouraged me to be strong.  Hence, I do the same for my daughters.  I will still talk to her.  Peace be to you in heaven, mama.


Some thoughts/memories of my mother, Lorraine Germann:

Mom was the 7th child of 9, born to German parents Anna and Jacob Koch. They were a farming family, very devoted to their (Catholic) faith, and insured that the family attended church every Sunday. They were very poor, but mom always said they never realized it. Hand-me-down clothing and used shoes were the norm, but mom LOVED her childhood on the farm. 

Mom married when she was 19 years old. My dad "won" a photo of her in a poker game while serving in the Army with one of her older brothers. And as they say, the rest is history.

Mom made the best apple pies, chocolate chip cookies and a wonderful concoction at Thanksgiving called "Heavenly Salad" that usually disappeared fast. As condolence calls have come in this week, several people have mentioned those tasty pies.

Mom enjoyed being a grandmother. My niece, Meggin, summed it up best: "There are grandmothers that you grew up seeing once in a while, who called occasionally and you saw them on holidays. Then, there are grandmothers who helped raise you. You saw them every weekend, they took care of you while you were sick, knew everything about you, lived long enough to know their great-grandkids (and came to see them as soon as they were born) and helped you become the person you are today."  That describes Lorraine Germann to a T.

Next to faith and family, mom had two additional passions: eating ice cream and playing Bingo. Mint chocolate chip practically made her swoon, but shouting "Bingo" was as close to heaven on earth that she could imagine.

Mom always referred to her eventual death as "when I become an angel."  Although we didn't hear the little tinkling bell, I think it's safe to say she achieved this wish on July 2, 2018, just before 2 p.m.

Lorraine is survived by two daughters: Victoria Heminger (Mike) of Colleyville, TX; Valerie Bruderly (Frederick) of Fishers, IN; one brother, Richard Koch (Mary Ann) of Lindstrom, MN; five granddaughters: Amy Orr (Kelley) of North Richland Hills, TX; Jane Vardiman (Dermot) of Euless, TX; Leila Warren (Tyrone) of Lewisville, TX; Meggin Gates (Brad) of Carmel , IN; Abbie Howard (Jason) of Fishers, IN; eleven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons, as well numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, E. J. Germann, four sisters and four brothers.
