Sam was born and raised in Oklahoma City, son of Samuel and Vera Fryer. He spent summers on his grandfather’s ranch wrestling cattle. He was a good student and eventually graduated from MIT in Chemical Engineering and Harvard University with an MBA degree. Sam also served in Army Corps of Engineers, Reserve Corps.
In 1962, he married Carol Jones, a Tulsa, Oklahoma native, and they settled there. His career in the energy industry later took him to Texas, back to Oklahoma, and then Kansas. Upon retirement, Sam and Carol moved to Southlake, Texas to be near his daughter and grandchildren. He enjoyed then having the time to pursue his love of flying and golf. He was a member of Whites Chapel Methodist Church for 25 years and a faithful attendee of the Faithbuilders sunday school class. Sam was always interested in meeting new people, and he loved a good story. He was an avid reader, especially books of history and stories of the Old West. He provided his grandchildren many lasting memories of tales of his life and rides in his golfcart and his Cessna!
He is preceded in death by his wife, Carol and his brother, Charlie, who was killed in action in Vietnam. He is survived by his sister, Sue Boots, his children Karen Smith, Cathy Anderson, and Sam Fryer, as well as 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
There will be a graveside family service on June 28 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
