When I left the military in 1968 I had been taking civilian flying lessons at the Gulfport municipal airport. I was offered a job in the DFW area and since I knew there were several flying schools in the DFW area, I took the job. I had a private pilot’s license at the time but I wanted to progress to higher skills. The first day that I had off from work I went to Modern Aero at Red Bird airport to inquire about pilot training. I went into the office and there was this short redhead woman behind the counter checking pilots in and out with airplanes they had scheduled. She asked if she could help me and I told her what I needed. She replied “I’ll have an instructor for you in just a moment.” I signed up to continue my instruction there. I also found out that the redhead had a private pilot’s license and was single. Several weeks later one of the instructors told me that Shirley had the Cessna 172 scheduled for a one hour flight. Then he asked if I would go with her on that flight. Sounded odd to me as we both had the same license. But of course I said I would be glad to go. It did not sound like he was concerned about her damaging the airplane. You guessed it. That led to us dating. Which led to us meeting after work on December19 with a Baptist preacher in Irving, Tx, with a marriage license in hand and the rest is history. There were some rough spots along the way but we made it passed them for 54 years. Shirley may you Rest In Peace now with no more pain. Chuck Hogan your loving husband

Shirley was my best friend, confidant, and sister of my heart!  IBM, Towers II, was our meeting place some 40 years ago.  She took this “branch” person under her arm and showed me the ropes for being a HQ person.  We collaborated on many activities as manager and subordinate.  Although, I was the manager, Shirley skillfully managed me at times. We shared our work and our lives as only sisters could do.  We enjoyed each other’s  company and could spend hours together.  She was the “red headed firecracker”and I was “the blonde”.  What fun we had and oh, the secrets we shared!  Shirley needed me these last few months and I treasure every moment we shared.  We talked about her induction into the IBM Quarter Century Club, read all her letters and her retirement party (not official one)and the fun times we had.  I miss her and know she is smiling down on all of us.  Rest in peace, my dear friend.

My name is Dean Newman. Charles is an older cousin. I have fond memories of Charles spending time with my older brothers Don and John when our families would get together. After we were adults Don would organize family gatherings  and Shirley and Charles would join us. Shirley was always thoughtful of our remaining aunts, Allie and Mozelle, and would share any updates. I think the last time we saw Charles and Shirley was at the visitation when Don died. It was so thoughtful of you to come when Shirley was feeling poorly herself. Pat and I send our sympathy, love and prayers at this time. I’m sure your memories will comfort you.

Shirley was my second mom, taking me under wing when we met at IBM in 1974. She trained me and instilled in me what it means to be a dedicated IBMer, a true professional, and to deal with everyone with responsiveness and courtesy, even those I didn't like. She set me on a path for a long rewarding career. She was my go-to person for any big decision in my life. Both being redheads she claimed me as her "kid" and it stuck. I'm honored to be considered her "daughter of the heart" and to be a part of her life as we say goodbye to this great lady. She is likely project managing everyone in Heaven. Much love, Pam
