He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Pittsburgh at the age of 46 with a 3.9 GPA. After growing up across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky in the Clarksville, Indiana area, he enlisted in the Air Force and took college courses at night. One of his greatest accomplishments was authoring the book, Grounders: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Journey of Baseball, History, and Mentoring, published in October 2011. The book imparts his life experiences while mentoring his three grandsons and four other young men while attending Major League Baseball games in 10 cities in 21 days.
Philanthropy was a passion. Tom was involved with many organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters, HOPE Farm and Nazareth Retreat. He established a scholarship program for University of Pittsburgh students involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters, and because of his desire to help at-risk children, he created his own charitable organization Little Big Shot in 2013.
A life-long sportsman, Tom was an avid supporter of University of Kentucky basketball, the Texas Rangers, and enjoyed walking, pick-up basketball games, fishing and finding lost change.
With the motto of ‘with hard work, anything can be accomplished,’ he touched many lives, always willing to get involved, always willing to help or mentor, always willing to help improve, always willing to go the extra mile.
He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, October 4, 2018, at 12:30pm at Bluebonnet Funeral Home, 5725 Colleyville Blvd., Colleyville, Texas 76034, followed by a reception in the Bluebonnet Family Lounge.
