Violet was born Feb. 28, 1924, in Milbank, S.D., the daughter of John Peter Knute Lundeen and Anne Matilda Swanson (Swensdaughter) Lundeen. A strong and adventurous woman, Violet worked as an air traffic control radio operator in Atlanta, Ga., during World War II and attended Georgia State University. In 1947 she moved back to Milbank, S.D., and married her high school sweetheart, Virgil Baker. Together they had six children and enjoyed 66 blessed years of marriage.
While she worked in retail and banking, Violet was first and foremost a warm and wonderful mother. She loved caring for her family, sharing her creative, artistic spirit and love of flowers abundantly. After retirement, she and Virgil enjoyed fishing and traveled extensively throughout the U.S., sharing their love with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A woman of great faith, Violet and her family were members of Peace Lutheran Church for over 47 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five brothers; two sisters; and infant daughter, Deborah Lee.
Survivors: Violet will be remembered by her children, Linnea Baker, Sandra Ware, Paul Baker, Mary Kress and Eric Baker; their spouses; 25 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her sister, Phyllis Mayer.
