Edward King Davis, Jr., 76, of Collierville, died on October 3, 2015, at his home. The family will gather to receive friends on Wednesday, October 7, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Collierville Funeral Home, and graveside services will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Magnolia Cemetery. Around 1840, the Davis family were pioneers in Shelby County and settled in the Bailey Station area. The family was prominent in the cotton industry and in law. King was born on November 18, 1938 in Memphis, to the late Edward King Davis, Sr. and Nina Jackson Davis. He attended Columbia Military Academy and Collierville schools, and he served in the Army Reserve for eight years. Mr. Davis attended Freed-Hardeman University and graduated from the University of Memphis with his Associate and Bachelor’s degrees and his Master’s Degree in Health Administration. Following graduation, he was a pharmaceutical representative for many years with Ciba, Pfizer, and Abbott Laboratories. After receiving his nursing degree, he worked as Head Nurse on the psychiatric floor at Baptist Hospital, which began a long career with Baptist. King had a long career as Administrative Supervisor in the nursing office. When Baptist East Hospital was opened, he transferred there and was instrumental in that transition. Mr. Davis loved his job in the nursing office where he made many friends and was well respected and liked. He never missed a day of work until he suffered a massive head injury in 1987, which changed his life forever. King was always a “people person” and never failed to learn and remember the names of everyone he met. He was unique in every way, and his personality of love and compassion influenced many. Mr. Davis was a conservative Republican, a longtime member of Germantown church of Christ, and he was an avid Bible scholar. He was a member of the Creation Research Society and was a sustaining member until his death. King is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Susan Mougey Davis; three devoted and loving daughters, Anne Elizabeth Davis Dacus, Lisa Elaine Davis Bishop (Paul), and Amber Leigh Davis Murphy (Chris); seven precious grandchildren, Andrew, David and Lauren Dacus, Taylor and Alex Bishop, Ashlyn and Zach Murphy. He also leaves his sister, Nina Davis Wright (Joe). The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation and many thanks to the nurses, care partners, and staff of Specialty Hospice in Olive Branch for their amazing care. In lieu of flowers, lasting memorials in Mr. Davis memory may be directed to either Germantown church of Christ or the Collierville Animal Shelter.
