Robert G. Capra, Jr., age 78, passed away on August 2, 2021 at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis. Born on February 16, 1943 in St. Louis, MO, Bob grew up in St. Louis, Nashville, and Lebanon, TN. After graduating from Union University in Jackson, TN with a degree in Music, Bob did graduate work at the St. Louis Institute of Music. Following his education, he moved to Memphis, TN to work in the pipe organ industry. He soon founded his own company that specialized in pipe organ design, sales, installation, and maintenance.
For more than 50 years, Bob spread joy through music as he designed and maintained hundreds of church organs across the southern United States. With his gregarious personality, Bob relished his work travel, making many lifelong friends. In every town he visited, Bob sought out the best local cuisine. In addition to building organs, Bob was a passionate church musician. He served as organist/choirmaster at the Church of the Holy Apostles, where he was an active communicant since 1969. His dynamic (and loud!) performances introduced many to the power and exhilaration of pipe organ music.
Bob was also an avid power boater who loved nothing more than being on the water at Pickwick Lake. In his later years, he collected model trains and often found joy in restoring forgotten treasures.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Grace and Robert G. Capra, Sr. He leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Carole Lynn Capra, of Collierville, and two sons, Robert and Tony.
He will be interred at the Church of the Holy Apostles in a private family ceremony. A memorial concert to celebrate his life and music will be scheduled for a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorials should be sent to the National Kidney Foundation (https://www.kidney.org/donation) or to the Church of the Holy Apostles.
