Walter Sidney Mitchell

Walter Sidney Mitchell, 90, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2025. A proud graduate of Humes High School, Class of 1953, Sidney attended Memphis State University before serving his country with honor in the United States Marine Corps.

A man of integrity, honesty, and unwavering dependability, Sidney was deeply devoted to his family. As a young man, he found joy in playing sports and later took great pride in coaching his sons’ teams, always leading by example. His faith and family were the foundation of his life, and he lived each day with love, kindness, and dedication to those he held dear. Above all, Sidney was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a cherished grandfather. His legacy of love, strength, and unwavering faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Sidney was preceded in death by his parents, Chester Mitchell and Mary Edna Humphrey Mitchell.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Marjorie Billions Mitchell; his sons, Wayne Mitchell and Michael Mitchell (Eleonora); his granddaughter, Laura Potts (Evan); and his great-grandchildren, Rowan Potts and Ellis Potts. He is also survived by his sisters, Marilyn Wray and June Wood, and many more loving in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Sidney’s memory will be forever cherished by his family and friends, who will continue to honor his life and the love he shared.

A visitation for Sidney will be held Thursday, March 13, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Covenant Baptist Church, 3170 S Houston Levee Rd, Collierville, TN 38017. A funeral service will occur Thursday, March 13, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, 3170 S Houston Levee Rd, Collierville, TN 38017. A committal service will occur Thursday, March 13, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 2:20 PM at West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 4000 Forest Hill Irene Rd, Memphis, TN 38125.
