Albert R. Garrett Sr. lived a life of faith, wisdom, and compassion, and on Monday, August 19, 2024, departed this world for glory. Al, as he was affectionately called, was born on September 3, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois to Robert and Alva Garrett.
He graduated from Proviso East High School and his further education was enhanced in the military. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War, served as a chemical specialist and an instructor for the army in this area. His desire and passion were to become an entrepreneur, and thus owned his own Town Car Limousine Service and later Al’s Chicken and Waffle Restaurant. Al’s favorite pastime was fishing and he was an avid fisherman. Oftentimes with the reels in the truck, he would be prepared and accompanied by his son and or grandson for a “catch”.
He was married in September of 1963 and to this union, three children – the loves of his life - were born Albert Jr., Jeniece, and Alica to whom he affectionately attached his pet names: Albert Jr. (Buggy), Jeniece (Knee Knee), and Alica (Tutna Bell). His grandchildren and great-grandson were the twinkle in his eye and he could tell you about each of them without hesitation: Cheryl, Alexzander, Alexis and D’Andre. He later was united with Mrs. Freddie May Davis.
Al accepted Christ as his personal Savior and joined Perfect Peace Baptist Church. Here he enjoyed his faith walk serving as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher, as well as supporting his Pastor and his church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Alva Garrett and his two brothers, Robert W. Garrett and Leslie C. Garrett.
Though Al has departed this earthly realm, his spirit lives on in the hearts and actions of those he leaves behind. His wife, Freddy Mae, his three children, Albert Garrett Jr., Jeniece Thomas (Gary), Alicia Garett; three grandchildren Cheryl Richards, Alexzander Lunsford, Alexis Garrett, and his great-grandson D’Andre Anderson. His sister, Dr. Carolyn Williams (John); Sisters-in-law, Mrs. Faye Garrett and Mrs. Virginia Garrett; brother-in-law, Prathon Henry; nephews, Leslie Garrett Jr, Robert Garrett II, Robert Westbrook III; Nathan Williams, nieces, Juanita Garrett, Jedidah Williams; step-sons, Denmark Whitaker and Jimmy Adams; and a host of friends.
A visitation for Albert will be held Tuesday, August 27, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Memorial Gardens Cemetery & Funeral Home, 3825 Airport Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80910. A memorial service will occur Thursday, August 29, 2024 from 11:00 AM at Perfect Peace Baptist Church, 832 S. Nevada Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80903.
