Beverley June Thieman of Rush, Colorado, quietly passed in her sleep on December 27, 2017. She was 87 years old and lived a full life.
Beverley was born on July 23, 1930, in Burns, Colorado, to Clarence and Carrie (Aldaffer) Hubbard. It was here that she was given her nickname of “Boots “which remained with her throughout her life. Even though she left Burns when she was 6 years old, this was always home to her. She continued to go back to fish, hunt, or visit old friends and neighbors as often as possible. Her father Clarence Hubbard was a homesteader, and she grew to love the mountains in that area. The first move found the family in Colorado Springs where her parents purchased a grocery store. She and her family remained there until she was 14 at which time her parents traded the store for a ranch in Rush, Colorado. This was to become her home for the majority of her life. While Boots was in high school, Kenny Lunsford began staying in their home and eventually became like a brother to Boots. She graduated in 1948 from Miami High School. She enjoyed playing basketball and baseball while in high school and continued playing after graduation in Colorado Springs. This love of sports remained in Boots as she was able to watch her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play in their sporting activities.
Beverley (Boots) married Orville (Slim) Thieman in 1949, and to this union was born three children: Pamela Sue, Raymond Orville, and Sherie Lou. When they were first married, they made their home southwest of Yoder. In 1959, they purchased their present home north of Rush from Clarence and Carrie Hubbard (Boots’ parents), and Beverley was able to remain there until her death. While living in the Rush community, Boots and Orville purchased and operated the Rush Café from 1964 to 1986. This became a focal point for Boots and her involvement with the Rush community.
After her retirement in 1987, Boots faced her greatest challenge in life. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). In the beginning stages, Boots was unable to turn herself over in bed and that was when she became determined to walk again. With great will and steady determination, she was eventually able to walk, but this disease changed her life forever.
Beverley was a long-time member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 143 in Colorado Springs. She enjoyed many nights dancing and being with her friends. She was also a member of the Rush United Methodist Church and became renowned to all in her pursuit of selling annual raffle tickets. During her more active years, she and her family would spend time fishing in the high country near Burns, Colorado. The family also spent many summer vacations in the Luark’s cabin in the same area. Eventually, the fishing trips and cabin experiences for over two decades turned into long-standing family traditions.
Beverley was preceded in death by her husband Orville, her parents Clarence and Carrie Hubbard, brother Kenneth Lunsford and four half-sisters: Edna, Nova, Blanche and Babe. She is survived by her daughter Pam Vigil and her 2 children: Pami Perea and Rikki (Dan) Vigil; son Ray (Debbie) Thieman and their 4 children: Chad (Tracy) Thieman, Brent (Kelly) Thieman, Carrie (Shawn) Bennett, and Rebecca (Curtis) Stanko; and daughter Sherie (Willis) Kelly and their 3 sons: Willis Kelly, Wade (Danelle) Kelly, and Cade Kelly. She is also survived by 24 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, long-time friend and caregiver Nadine Johns, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to express their thanks to all the caregivers who have provided the daily care for Boots for the past two years. Special thanks is given to Nadine Johns who has been an angel to this family and to Hospice in Colorado Springs who was by Boots’ side until the end. The family appreciates the dignity you bestowed on our Mom.
