Daniel was born on February 17, 1944 in Oneida, NY to the late Vincent and Ella Mae Wagner. He was the oldest of their three children. He loved sharing his fond memories of growing up on East Hamilton Ave in Sherrill, NY. During his school years in Sherrill, he acquired the love of the outdoors by shadowing his father while trout fishing and hunting.
Dan graduated from Vernon, Verona, Sherrill (VVS) High School in 1962. After graduating from SUNY Plattsburgh, he was awarded a scholarship for his graduate work at Cornell University.
In 1968, Dan started his career as a scientist with Norwich Eaton pharmaceuticals which was later acquired by Procter and Gamble Pharmaceuticals in Norwich, NY.
He retired from Procter and Gamble in 2006 after 38 years.
On July 12, 1997 he was united in marriage to Julia Wagner at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Norwich, NY.
Dan was an avid outdoorsman. He loved the quiet and the challenge of the outdoors. Fishing and hunting were his loves. He tried sharing those loves with his wife, Julie. He was more successful sharing those loves with his stepson, Andrew. While living in Norwich, he enjoyed watching Norwich high school sports. He took great pride in attending and verbally participating in Becky, Nathan, and Andrew's sporting events. He was very proud of all their accomplishments. He bragged routinely about all three of them throughout their adult lives.
Dan and Julie spent many weekends hiking New York state trails. They both had a great sense of accomplishment finishing the FLT trail together covering over 500 miles of beautiful NYS trails and earning hiking patches for each NYS county. Together they spent many days biking most of the Erie Canal trail across New York State. As a team they hiked 17 of the Adirondack High Peaks. They enjoyed life and each other. In the early spring to late fall in upstate NY, you would find Dan golfing in one of his many golf leagues or at the driving range. Saturday evenings in the winter you would find him and the whole family and as many neighborhood kids that would fit in his van downhill skiing at Labrador Mountain. He always had an active role in managing the ski club. When his daughters were young, he coached their softball teams.
Chenango County environmental programs were very important to Dan. He was on the local “Norwich Tree Preservation Committee." He was a member of the Chenango County Environmental Management committee, where he later served as President. He served for several years on the Chenango County United Way Board of Directors.
In 2006 he and his wife Julie built a home surrounded by woods and nature in Sherburne, NY. It was certainly his sanctuary. In 2017, they decided to move to warmer climate and chose to move to Murrells Inlet, SC. He felt so fortunate being surrounded by golf and wonderful SC neighbors.
Dan is survived by his wife Julie of 28 years. He is survived by his two daughters Lisa Valatka of Rhode Island; Rebecca (Jess) Alfieri of Churchville, NY; his stepson Nathan Reid (Carolyn) of East Sandwich, MA; and stepson Andrew Reid (Jenny) of Colorado Springs CO.
