David Peterson, a proud Navy veteran, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on December 31, 2024, at the age of 76. He was blessed to spend his final days surrounded by his loving family. Born October 15, 1948, in Detroit, Michigan, he spent his early childhood with his aunt and uncle in Missouri before returning to live with his father and sister, Donna, in Livonia, Michigan.
A 1966 graduate of Franklin High School in Livonia, David entered the U.S. Navy in June 1967, serving with distinction as a field medical corpsman with the Navy Marines during the Vietnam War. Following his honorable service, he pursued higher education at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, while working in the ICU and ER at Lutheran Hospital. It was there that he met the love of his life, Sharon Biernbaum, a dedicated RN. The two often spent their weekends enjoying music and dancing together. They were married on May 5, 1973, beginning a partnership that spanned over five decades. Together, they raised three children: Lindsey, Valerie (Jason McIntosh), and Kurt (Manuela Wijayanti). David was also a doting grandfather to Norah, Fiona, and Declan McIntosh who called him Grandaddy. His children and grandchildren brought him endless joy and pride. His dog, Brimley, was also a cherished member of the family.
David eventually returned to the University of Nebraska which allowed him to become a family counselor. Known for his heart for children, this work allowed him to bring change to the lives of countless young people, and inspired David and Sharon to take in two foster children. His dedication extended globally, as he sponsored three children through Compassion International, developing meaningful relationships with them and even visiting two in Indonesia, an experience which brought him great joy.
A man of faith, David loved the Lord and was an active member of Vista Grande Baptist Church. He was a music enthusiast, record collector and a proud veteran, deeply committed to his country. David loved sharing small gifts and tokens of affection with his family, friends, neighbors and even strangers. His legacy is one of love, service, and kindness.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Unsponsored Children’s Fund at Compassion International. www.Compassion.com
