Our precious mother Dixie Mae Johnson passed away on August 9, 2024, in Colorado Springs, Colorado at the age of 90. Dixie was born on November 22, 1933, in Dixons Mill, Alabama to James Worthy and Pauline Dixon Hosea, who preceded her in death.
She served in the United States Air Force for six years before working as a military pay specialist for the Air Force, Navy, and Army, retiring after 33 years of civil service. During her military service, she met her soulmate of 54 years, Walter H. Johnson, who preceded her in death. Together, they had four children: Brenda, Kelly, Walter Jr., and Erica. Her beloved son Walter Jr. also preceded her in death. She was further blessed with three grandchildren: Travis, Dyanna, and Dwayne Jr.
Dixie accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior as a young woman and faithfully served Him throughout her life. She was an active member of Soldiers Memorial Chapel at Fort Carson, Colorado, for over 40 years, where she enjoyed volunteering as a hostess, serving coffee and donuts after church. Dixie also cherished working alongside her husband during Vacation Bible School. After her husband's death, Dixie joined Fountain Independent Baptist Church in Fountain, Colorado, where she remained a member until her passing.
Our mother loved working with ceramics, a passion that began when our father was stationed in Alaska. She was also an accomplished knitter and crocheter, creating many ponchos, sweaters, and hats for our family.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters Brenda K. Richards, Kelly M. Hills [Dwayne], and Erica M. Johnson [Terry McDowell]; her grandchildren Travis W.H. McDowell, Dyanna G. McCall [Damon], and Dwayne E. Hills Jr. She is survived by her brother Richard B. Hosea of Kansas City, Missouri, and her maternal cousins, dear friend; Clara Akins and her beloved sisters-in-law, and brother-in-law, all of Peoria, Illinois. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. [Her brother James Worthy Hosea preceded her in death]
