DORIS ANN BRAUER HUEBNER was born on March 6, 1931 in Oak Park IL, daughter of Otto and Gertrude Brauer. She was baptized by her paternal grandfather, Pastor Carl Brauer, on March 22, 1931 in Forest Park, IL, her home town. Doris was the third of three children, Norman and Richard being older brothers.
Both sets of grandparents, many aunts, uncles and cousins lived within a five mile radius, allowing for many family gatherings. Even throughout those depression years, celebrating each one’s birthdays and important occasions with home-made fun, lively discussions, simple fare, always ending with singing and devotions, made wonderful memories for Doris. Her mother’s illness for many years, and the continued devoutness of faith in a caring God by her parents to deal with this anguish, remained a life-long example to her.
Doris attended St. John’s Lutheran Church and school in Forest Park, IL, graduating from this large elementary school in the spring of 1945. The motto for her eighth grade class was “Jesus, our Pilot”, which was the basis for the speech she gave at her graduation. Doris was confirmed on March 25, 1945. Her special confirmation verse was Psalm 23.
Doris graduated from Concordia High School, River Forest IL, in 1949. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Concordia College, River Forest in 1953. Her maternal grandfather, Henry Gaertner, had been a music professor there form 1921-1952. While a college student, Doris was especially active in choir and student government organizations in various capacities. Doris remained close friends with classmates she first met as a Concordia High School freshman, “The Round Robiners”, thought her life.
After graduation in the fall of ‘53, she taught 5th grade at the campus training school, Grace Lutheran, River Forest, as well as assisting the Dean of Women on campus.
Young man, Donald Huebner, a fellow classmate, continued to sweet-talk her, gave her an engagement ring and promise of love and faithfulness in the chapel on campus on Christmas Eve, 1953, resulting in a wonderful marriage on August 1, 1954, at Grace Lutheran Church, River Forest.
1954-1955 she taught first grade at Bethlehem School, Lakewood CO, where Don was also a teacher. Accepting a call to begin a Lutheran elementary school, this young couple then moved to Chicago in the summer of 1955. There ,Doris taught 1st,2nd and 3rd grades. She also played the organ for church services, followed by teaching half-day kindergarten for two years.
Being the mother of three darling children, Jerry, Paul and Ruth, had been an answer to her prayers. Once the children were school age, 1969, Doris resumed teaching at Lyon School, Glenview IL, where they then lived. She retired teaching from that school in the spring of 1990. At the time of her retirement, the School District Assistant Superintendent wrote this of her, “Creative and energetic, conscientious and caring, Ms. Huebner was a most valuable member of our teaching staff who earned the respect and admiration of parents, students, and colleagues.”
The Huebner children now grown and on their own, Don and Doris, both retired, moved to Colorado Springs in the summer of 1991, primarily to be of assistance to the elderly Huebner parents living in Denver as well as liking the amenities of beautiful Colorado. Throughout the years, Doris was involved in many church activities, the primary focus being choir, teaching Sunday school, and an assortment of outreach endeavors.
In October 2021, Don and Doris moved into an assisted living facility in Colorado Springs. Although this was a drastic change, they found activities to enjoy. Jerry and Ruth lived nearby and visited and helped them often. Paul called several times a week. They also had visits from grandchildren Kristin and Kevin. Doris was blessed with a great grandson, Carter, in 2022. Visits with Carter were very special to her. Don and Doris were able to watch, via streaming, the Family of Christ Lutheran church services. The staff and other residents referred to Doris as so loving and caring.
Doris’ faith and family, striving to share to comfort and joy of the following written belief, was first and foremost in her life-
“I believe we have forgiveness of our sins due to Jesus suffering and death in our place.”
“I believe in the resurrection of the body and a life everlasting with God.”
“This is my ultimate comfort and joy to share with you.”
“Praise be to God for His merciful great love for us, we celebrate His life, death, and resurrection.”
Doris is survived by her three children; Jerry, Paul, Ruth, three grandchildren; Kate, Kristin, Kevin ,three great-grandchildren; Carter, Gracie, Hanna and brother Richard Brauer. She is preceded in death by her husband Donald Huebner, and brother Norman Brauer.
Memorials may be given to Family of Christ Church, or Pikes Peak Academy, both located in Colorado Springs.
The family wishes to extend our sincere appreciation to the staff at Morning Star Assisted Living and Family of Christ Lutheran church for their care, compassion and support. We also want to thank our many family members and friends for their prayers and support. God’s continued blessing to you all.
