Edward Meyer was born on May 12, 1950, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. His family moved to the small town of Brandon, South Dakota, where in the third grade, he met his future wife, Peggy. Ed was the second child of Leo and Katherine Meyer and is survived by his four brothers and one sister.
He attended the local school in Brandon where he excelled in academics and sports and enjoyed hunting, trapping and anything outdoors. His work ethic, which he is so well known for, started at a young age. Growing up Ed worked many odd jobs and then long hours at a local farm.
At 15, he started dating the love of his life, Peggy Lynn, as he would affectionately call her. These high school sweethearts would attend dances, drive-in movies and loved spending time together. They were best friends. Their lives changed when they both fully committed their hearts to Jesus at 16 at a church youth camp. Many of their times together was spent studying the Bible.
After graduating high school, Ed attended South Dakota State University where he received his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. He and Peggy, both full-time students, were married on March 21, 1970, at 19 years old. They drove their VW Bug to Colorado for their honeymoon, not realizing this would later be the place they would raise their children and that they would become an important part of the community there.
Fifteen months after marriage, they had their first-born Jamie, as they were finishing up college. After graduating they moved to Colorado and Ed began working for a civil engineering firm. Soon Jeremy was born and 2 1/2 years later Jason. Ed and Peggy raised their family in the same house in Colorado Springs for 24 years.
When Ed was 28 years old, he felt led to start an engineering firm with two other people. He and his partner, Roger Sams, ran the company for almost 40 years, which is still thriving today. Ed and the firm focused on helping small communities throughout Colorado with their water, wastewater, transportation, and drainage needs. Even after he retired in 2018, his impact in these communities and the relationships he developed are still alive to this day.
Ed’s pride and joy was his family. His children Jamie (Ron) Purewal, Jeremy (Julie) Meyer, Jason (Amy) Meyer and his seven grandchildren Nathan, Noah, Jaden, Madison, Ethan, Anna, and Christian have been one of his greatest joys. He cherished time with them; taking them to the mountains, camping, boating, hunting, fishing, or just taking drives to look at the Fall leaves. Each family members’ birthday was celebrated as well as holidays by taking trips to the mountains and the beach. This was on top of the day-to-day life of going to grandchildren’s games, recitals, graduations, and special events. He was the family’s biggest fan!
The common theme through all of Ed’s life was living out his passion for Jesus. This was seen in how he was intentionally loving his family, serving his staff at work, tirelessly working to make required projects affordable for communities, providing time, energy and wisdom to his church and purposefully building his friendships with family and friends. Ed took every opportunity to share God’s love to those around him.
Pages of words could not begin to describe the amazing friend, father, husband, brother, coworker, etc. that Ed was to each of us. The memories are abundant, the advice is precious, his love to us is unforgettable. He will be deeply missed until we are together again.
A celebration of life for Edward will be held Thursday, August 25, 2022 at 10:30 AM at Charis Christian Center, 10285 Federal Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80908.
