Helen was born August 16, 1928 in Mercer, Pennsylvania to Gladys Viola Drake Lowry and Clyde Lester Lowry. She attended New Wilmington High School and graduated in 1946. She was employed by Penn State College, New Castle- VA office before marrying Bill, her one and only, on March 17, 1948, St Patrick’s Day. She and William (Bill) lived in New Castle, Pennsylvania until 1981 when they moved to Colorado Springs.
Helen was the matriarch of the family. She and Bill raised six children and helped with raising the grandchildren.
Helen and Bill traveled all over the USA, Australia and Scotland. They both loved working the Colorado Springs Farmers Market at Acacia Park and also spent a lot of time at the Colorado Springs Soup Kitchen serving the homeless, and the Lord.
Helen was an avid reader, Master Jigsaw Puzzler and wonderful chef, always preparing meals, desserts and snacks for those around her. There were delightful cinnamon rolls, or a from- scratch molasses cake made in a little square pan with real whipped cream topping. Other delights loved by all were her lemon meringue pie and German chocolate cake with homemade coconut pecan frosting. And not to be forgotten were the special Aunt Doll’s cookies at Christmas!
Helen volunteered her time at the First Presbyterian Church mail room, performed the duties of a deacon, volunteered for Ecumenical Shared Ministry projects making sandwiches for the children and more at First Presbyterian Church. She was a very humble person, and a good and faithful servant. Always in service to others, she provided end of life care to her husband Bill, her mother and her father in law in their declining health.
Helen will be so happy to see Bill again. You can imagine he will say “Hey Ma, how about some of that cake”. Helen will be smiling from ear to ear to see her younger brothers, Donald and Bud, her beloved mother and father and all the others that went on before. She will be so full of joy to see her wonderful Savior Jesus. Welcome home, Mom! Your long and difficult journey is done, now you can enjoy the heavenly banquet of bread with real butter and bowls of ice cream.
Helen is survived by all her children: Sharon (Jim) Pletcher of Woodland Park, CO; William (Marianne) Hunt of Boulder, CO; Susan Zimmer of Sahuarita, AZ; Kathleen (Rick) Cirka of Westcliffe, CO; Samuel (Jennifer) Hunt of Monument, CO; and Daniel (Rebecca) Hunt of Newberry, MI. Also 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, William W. Hunt.
Memorial Contributions in Helen’s name can be sent to Deacon’s Fund, First Presbyterian Church of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
