John was an "Air Force Brat" and spent most of his childhood in Dayton, Ohio and Silver Spring, Maryland. Active in the Boy Scouts of America, John achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. In high school he was on the wrestling team.
He joined the District of Columbia Air National Guard in 1969. He was trained and served as an Air Traffic Controller.
John graduated in 1971 from the University of Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in Information Systems. He worked as a systems analyst until becoming an adjunct professor teaching computer security at Colorado Technical University and the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. John was a man with many interests. He took scuba diving lessons and progressed to become an instructor. He took trips to the Gulf of Mexico on dive boats and even went cave diving.
