Joyce was born on September 25, 1932, in Dixon, Illinois, the eldest of two children born to Royal ‘Johnny’ Johnson, and Marguerite (Trotter) Johnson. Her sister, Carol, was born in 1936. The family lived in Dixon until the mid-1940’s when they moved to Woodland Park, Colorado, where she attended school.

In the late 60’s they moved to Colorado Springs where they lived until 1977, when they moved to Peyton, CO, where they lived for the rest of their lives. They had seven children: Susan, David, Douglas, Dennis, Cathy, Dwight and Donald.
