When I think about my friend Kay I think first and foremost about her huge heart. 

Then I marvel at her huge intellect, amazing vocabulary and her self deprecating sense of humor. 

 When I survey my surroundings at any given time, I can see gifts that Kay has given me over the years. We all know she refused to arrive empty handed to anybody’s home. I see a coffee cup with the initial K, a piece of her woodsy artwork, some little wooden fishes, a winter photograph of the cabin that she took.  

Here are some of things that Keath Baretta taught me. 

  1. You must change the water in cut flower arrangements every day to preserve their longevity.  

2. You must always roll a lime on the countertop before you cut it and slice it. 

3. Magic marker is an excellent substitute for nail polish if you do not have any nail polish. 

4. Nobody ever really needs to wear shoes. 

5. Peanut butter tastes the best in the middle of the night straight out of the jar with the biggest spoon you can find. 

 I requested one of her famous tutorials on how to create the fabulous, multi layered, multicolored turban that was her signature look on a bad hair day. She began by telling me” you must first find a scarf that is precisely 6 feet long with 3 to 4 inches of fringe on each end”. She then proceeded to instruct me on the complicated process of twisting and knotting the scarf and tying the fringed ends together. I was never able to master this art. Apparently, I must’ve missed the orientation.  

 After Jim Barkley introduced us, I began to wait with great anticipation for Beatrice the Bondo Mobile-to come sputtering down the dirt road. Kay needed her doggy love on a regular basis. Since she preferred to sit on the floor vs furniture, she was fair game for every dog  in the immediate area. She loved them all and allowed them leave layers of doggy hair all over her black Stevie Nicks outfits.  

I called her Chaos and she hated it.   

Kay was a soul well loved and too soon lost.

Keath was my first college roommate, and remained a trusted friend through the years. My heart breaks for all of you in her loss. When I lost my husband suddenly in an accident in 2020, Keath was quick to offer her prayers, condolences, and support. She continued to check in with me through the next three years. She was someone on whom I could count to lift my spirits. I can't wait to see her and my Robert again in Heaven! Thank you, Jesus, for that blessed assurance. Please reach out any time; since I'm a fairly young widow, I can lend support that others may not understand. Praying for all of you. 

What an absolute joy Kay was! She brought laughter and fun and kindness to each day and I have so many happy memories of her from our days growing up at Trinity in Dallas. I can tell she was very blessed to have been married to you, Marty, and I’m grateful to know she had such a wonderful husband. Praying for you and asking the Lord to comfort you as only He can. 

Kay showed the world what Jesus said when he told us to have child-like hearts and spirits. Kay’s love for everyone she encountered, her inner joy, her love of a simple life, and her giving selflessly of herself as a hospice volunteer will serve as an example for how I should live. Knowing her was a gift. 


Martin, I ache for you in your loss, and rejoice with you because we know that your lovely wife is with Jesus.  I know you knew that she came to be with me when I lost my dad, but she was the only childhood friend who made it to the service. That meant so much to me.  She and I had talked for years about how my wife and I will eventually move to Colorado Springs, and we still plan to in two years, and about being able to all spend time together.  When we get there, I will look you up, hoping that we get to meet.  She was truly an amazing person and I count myself very lucky to have been her friend.
