Michael O'Rear

Michael G. O'Rear, 57, passed away from a sudden heart attack on January 14, 2012, in Colorado Springs, CO. Mike was born in Andalusia, AL, on October 30, 1954, to Godfrey and Elizabeth O'Rear. He was the second of four children. Mike married Laura Ellen Fry on October 30, 1982. They raised four children: Stephen, Samuel, Joseph and Ellie. Mike received a degree in Pastoral Studies at Montana Institute of the Bible and earned an MA in Communications from Wheaton College (IL). After marrying Laura, he served as an Associate Pastor at First Baptist Church (Winnett, MT). Mike and Laura found their lifelong call while at the US Center for World Mission in Pasadena, CA, in 1983 when they joined the newly formed Global Mapping (GMI). Mike served for 28 years in the ministry and became President of GMI in 1991 when the ministry moved to Colorado Springs. Mike also served on the D20 school board from 2003-2007. He attended Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he was a beloved Sunday school teacher. Mike was preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth, his mother-in-law Maxine Fry, his infant son Andrew and his nephew Luke Fry. He is survived by his wife Laura O'Rear, his children Stephen, Samuel, Joseph (Megan), and Ellie O'Rear and grandson William O'Rear of Colorado Springs, CO; father Godfrey (Doris) O'Rear of Fitzgerald, GA; his brother David (Diana) O'Rear of Laurel, MT; his sister Connie Frank of Billings, MT; his brother Daniel (Sandy) O'Rear of Colorado Springs, CO; and countless other family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 18, at 11:00 a.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church (2845 Parliament Dr, Colorado Springs, CO 80920). A public viewing will take place on Tuesday, January 17, from 4-7 p.m. at Mountain View Mortuary (2350 Montebello Square Dr, Colorado Springs, CO 80918). In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to GMI (PO Box 63719, Colorado Springs, CO 80962) and will benefit Mike's family and the global ministry of GMI.
