In 1969, I wrote a letter to President Nixon expressing my feelings about the Vietnam War.  I was 5 years old.  I received I nice letter in response from Mr. Noble N. Melencamp, Staff Assistant to the President.  I thought I'd share the letter to honor Mr. Melencamp for his service to our country, and to offer hope for the healing of our divided country.

I learned of Noble Melencamp , his father, Dr. Melencamp, was my mother's first couisin.  While researching the Melencamp genealogy after my mother went to her heavenly home, my husband volunteered that we take a vacation in Sept. of 2013 or 2014 to visit the living relatives in Oklahoma and Kansas.   I had learned from my mother that her Uncle Henry Melencamp had homesteaded in Ok. during the early 19hundreds.  Meeting and visiting with several cousins in Ok., we were also very pleased to meet Noble  Melencamp, having the pleasure of his hospitality in so many ways.  He especially shared his interest while serving as a Foreign Service Diplomat and White House Chief of Staff during the Nixon administration.  He shared many photo's for my genealogy album in the 3 days we had with he and his dog.  My husband, who is a retired school teacher and Noble became well acquainted and their friendship continued on by phone after we returned home on many occasions.  We were shocked and saddened to learn of Noble's passing on line, after my birthday &  Christmas greetings to him were returned to me.  What a kind, thoughtful, interesting, gentleman.

I knew Noble for many years we both loved our dogs and I saw him on his daily walks - we talked many times and he had all this stories and such  wonderful memories living in different places and since I am from Europe I loved to remember all my times there. He was very sweet and kind and I loved the person he was and miss him. I walk by his house every day with my dog and see him standing there waving to me "Hello". Thank you Nobel and "Hello" to you!!

I knew Noble for many years as he was very close to my dear friend Ida Bullington and spent every Saturday with her and many holidays.  I lost contact with him after Ida's passing, but just wanted to say the world is a better place having had someone like Noble in it.  He is and always will be missed.

He was a good man.  I only met him once, but we talked as if we knew each other all my lives.  He is a family member of mine, on my mother's side.  He will be missed.

I was very sad to hear of the passing of Mr. Mellencamp. I always enjoyed seeing him at Albertsons. A very nice gentleman I will miss him.
