Dick was born in Sheldon, Wisconsin on May 11, 1937. He was the middle of three children of Ernest Baughman and Pauline Baughman-Panetti. In the 1940’s the Baughman’s bought on old farmstead near Greenwood, Wisconsin and worked together to build their family home and lumber business which remained in the family until 1989.
In 1955 Dick met his first wife, Marlyn Dyre. They became high school sweethearts and married in 1960. Dick served in the US Army from 1959 – 1963 and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Fort Carson, Colorado. In 1963 he and Marlie decided to move to Arizona so they built their own RV and headed West. Along the way, they stopped in Kansas to visit some friends, started shootin’ the bull, and ended up hangin’ around for seven years while they worked, made some really good friends, and adopted their only son, Val.
In 1970 they scrapped the Arizona plan and moved to Colorado settling in Ellicott just East of Colorado Springs. For the next 30 years Dick spent a lot of time “behind the wheel” commuting an average of two hours daily to servicing and repairing heavy machinery. Dick was an “early adopter” of wireless technology. He passed time on his daily commute talking “a lot about nothing” with a bunch of ornery old farts who eventually became some of his closest friends. His CB Handle was “the Diesel Doctor” and, when he signed off each night he’d always say “Keep a smile on your face and a song in your heart.”
Marlie passed away in 2011 and, not long after, Dick met the second love of his life, Marian. Delighting in their new love, they acted like giddy teenagers. Their granddaughter, Brianna, once caught them smooching! They didn’t waste much time courting since they were kind of old and had plenty of “prior experience.” They tied the knot in May of 2012 and enjoyed time together travelling to visit friends and family, discovering some great places, harassing each other, and even hunting together although Marian preferred hunting with her camera. Most of all, they truly cared for and loved each other.
Dick’s life was one well-lived and well-loved. He is survived by his wife (Marian), son (Val), brother (John), sister (Alice), step sons (Ralph and Phil), step daughter (Kathy). ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a whole bunch of extended family members. He even has a cousin, Harold, who is alive and kickin’ at 102 years old! He was preceded in death by his parents (Ernest and Pauline), first wife (Marlie), and granddaughter (Cassandra).
