

Richard Eugene Westbay - Dick Westbay was born in Colorado Springs May 24th 1930 and died on Sunday April 6th after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Marjorie (Smith) Westbay , his two daughters; Anne (Phil Marshall) and Kirsten Cortez (Rick Mayersky), four grandchildren; Megan and Daniel Cortez, and Dustin and Brandon Marshall, and four great grandchildren, a brother William Westbay (Gay Westbay) and 3 nephews, Jim, Rick and Steve Westbay. He was preceded in death by a brother Robert and a nephew, Bill Westbay.
Dick graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1949. In high school Dick was a four year three sport letterman. He played on Colorado Springs High School football team where they won the State Championship in 1948. He began his coaching career in Bakersfield, California after graduating from DU and before coming back to Colorado Springs as a teacher at North Junior High and coach at Colorado Springs High School.
He was the head football coach at Wasson High School where his 1971 team won the State Championship. Dick received multiple awards throughout his life for his football and coaching accomplishment. These included: The Scholastic Football coach of the year in 1966, The National High School Athletic Coaches Association Football Coach of the year in 1972, The Colorado High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1993, The CHSCA Hall of Fame in 1993, The F. Don Miller Award in 2010. He was inducted into the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame in 2005, 2010 and 2013 for his coaching and football career.
After a career which he loved, he retired to enjoy being active and enjoying the company of his family, golfing and traveling. He was a very important part of the Colorado Springs community and his presence will be missed.
In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum or the Assistance League of Colorado Springs in the name of Dick Westbay. A celebration of Dick’s life will be held at Johnny’s Navajo Hogan, 2817 N. Nevada, on Sunday April 13th from 2:00 to 4:00pm.
