Roy was born August 25, 1931, in Hammond, Indiana to Ira and Beatrice Kohen. Roy had three siblings: Dorris was firstborn, then Roy and his twin brother Ray, followed by Betty. Growing up near Chicago, Roy loved to attend dances and sail on the Great Lakes. As identical twins, Roy and Ray treasured the opportunity to fool friends, family, dates, and Navy buddies. Roy served as an Aviation Electronics Technician in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in Great Lakes, Illinois from 1951 to 1954, separating with an Honorable discharge. Partially through taking correspondence courses while in the Navy, Roy graduated from Purdue University.
Roy met his first wife, Barbara Ann, sailing in Michigan in 1961. They were married in 1962 in South Bend, Indiana. They had two children: Richard and Rebecca. As a young family they enjoyed many outdoor adventures — especially in the Rocky Mountains. Roy’s work with Martin Marietta, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the National Park Service enabled him to travel widely. As an Electrical Engineer, he enjoyed troubleshooting in unusual places and situations. Roy also enjoyed reading, gardening, and listening to talk radio (especially home repair shows).
Roy met his second wife, Janene Gail, at a dance in the mid-1980s. They were married in 1993 in Lakewood, Colorado. Together they showered their dogs and families with love and enjoyed dancing in many different styles at the Elks Lodge.
Roy is survived by Richard Kohen (Jeanette) and Rebecca Leinweber (David), and his four grandchildren Steven, Laura, Jonathan, and Rachel, from his first marriage. Roy is survived by Vickie Lampinen (Roy), Sheri Tiongco, and Janelle Smith, four grandchildren Dominique, Nicole, Angela, and Rhonda, and nine great-grandchildren Leilani, Kalel, Malia, Tatum, Talyn, Aliyah, Atreya, Corinna, and Briley, from his second marriage. Roy is preceded in passing by his wife Janene, and his siblings Dorris, Ray, and Betty.
Roy will be remembered for his kindness and gentle disposition. Friends and family are invited to a celebration-of-life service at MacKenzie Place in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The service will be held Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to animal shelters or organizations that promote medical science.
