She was born July 15th, 1937, in Sedgewick, KS, the daughter of the late Lawrence J. and Hazel J. Hickerson.
Shirley graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1955. After attending Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, she worked as a medical secretary at Fort Carson Army Base in Colorado Springs, CO.
She married Donald D. Drum on January 1, 1962. Together they moved to Missouri where they lived briefly before returning to Colorado Springs to reside in their custom-built home. Following Donald’s death in 1981, she later met and was married to John A. Thompson for over 20 years.
Family was important to her. She enjoyed her role as gramma the most, spending countless hours babysitting, hosting sleepovers, and playing endless board games. She even put aside her extreme fear of flying to travel to Pennsylvania to visit her first grandchild, Benjamin. Her church family meant a great deal to her. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs for over 62 years, serving as church librarian and assuming many roles in the United Methodist Women’s organization.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory two daughters, Kimberly Blinn (Donald) and Carolyn Fuhrmann (Dale); five grandchildren, Benjamin Blinn, Brendon Atkins, Dalton Fuhrmann, Makenna Fuhrmann, and Garrett Fuhrmann; and one great grandson, Destry Barnes. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Hickerson, and her second husband, John A. Thompson.
Visitation will take place Thursday, April 13, 2017, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm at Swan-Law Funeral Directors, 501 N. Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO.
