Victor Wilburn Helton, a long time resident of Colorado Springs, passed away on September 4th . He was born in Meta, Missouri on August 6th, 1925. His family moved to Colorado Springs when he was an infant with his family. His deceased parents were Luella Mc Kee Helton, and Raymond Justin Helton. He attended school in Colorado Springs at South Junior and Colorado Springs high School (Now Palmer). Before he was drafted into the Army he worked as a gas station attendant, and also worked at the local drug store. He served in the Army with Company B, 96th Chemical Mortar Battalion from 1943 to 1946 in European Theater. He was Honorably Discharged with the American Theater Ribbon, Emet Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Ribbon. He received qualifications as a Heavy Truck Driver, Heavy Mortar Crewman, and Rifle Sharpshooter. Throughout his life he remained true to his Country and what American stood for. After the Service he worked for Fort Carson in the Motor Pool as Civil Service for 27 years. During this period he worked his way up to the Supervisor/Inspector for Motor Transportation for Fort Carson. He married La Wanda Ward after his military service and they had a daughter, Vicci. That marriage ended in Divorce in 1953. His was a life time membership at the VFW Post 4051 in Colorado Springs, and the American Legion in Security, Colorado. Throughout his life he had many hobbies and interests. He loved cars, especially Chevys. He liked to hunt, and fish. He was a talented mechanic, and had great carpentry skills. On January 23, 1968 in Las Vegas, Nevada, he married Geraldine (Remling) Helton the love of his life. They were married for 38 years. Geraldine passed away in 2006. They spent most of their married life in Colorado Springs and moved to Bullhead, Arizona later on in retirement for about 13 years. In retirement they enjoyed traveling all over the World. They also did various volunteer activities through the VFW. They made many trips to the Veterans Home in Fort Lyon to donate time and service.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Kerval Helton of Colorado Springs, and Lloyd Helton of California, and a brother that died in infancy; and his sisters Ruby Bowie of Hobbs, NM, and Myrtie Hilton of Colorado Springs. He is survived by his daughter and son in-law, Vicci and Charlie Farney, Watertown, NY.
He is also survived by his three step-daughters and their husbands; Carol and Charlie Trujillo, Albuquerque, NM: Judy and Richard Christian, Fountain, CO; and Betty and Jack Bell, Lathrop, MO. He had twelve grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
A Visitation will be held on Friday, September 9, 2011 from 4-7pm. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 11:00am with the burial to follow. All will be held at Memorial Gardens Cemetery & Funeral Home.
