He grew up in Massachusetts and graduated from Clark University, Worcester, MA, with a degree in mathematics in 1964. He was a computer analyst for Worcester State Hospital before joining the US Air Force in 1967. He ended up in Colorado Springs, CO, in1967 where he met his wife Marie Theresa Albrecht. He was on assignment in Thule, Greenland when he proposed to her over the phone and came back to CO where they were married in Rye, CO, on November 16, 1968. He returned to Thule, Greenland, and they had one 10-minute call per week and wrote many letters back and forth until he returned 8 months later to NORAD and they enjoyed time in Colorado. He transferred to the Reserves and spent 17 years as a Liaison Officer, recruiting for USAFA and AFROTC. They moved back to central Massachusetts until the call of Colorado caused them to return to the Black Forest.
Walt and Marie have two sons, Douglas Raymond in central Massachusetts, and Carl Jeffrey (Stacie) in Greenfield, IN. They were both very active in scouting and Walt was Cubmaster and Troop Committee Chairman. He also went to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico as an adult leader twice. And he is survived by four grandchildren: Xylia Marie, Perrin Thurber, Leto Raymond, and Kya Ayrlynn Seelye, all in Massachusetts; and sister, Mary “Polly” Seelye Meltzer of Venice, Florida, as well as many cousins throughout the US.
He worked for several defense contractors as a computer analyst until retiring. He spent his retirement as a volunteer fireman/EMT for Black Forest Fire Rescue and as the treasurer of the BFFR board. He helped with the Slash/Mulch site and Black Forest Together, helping neighbors recover, rebuild and clean up after the 2013 devastating fire.
Walt enjoyed travelling with Marie to visit family and friends; they took several trips to Europe to visit Marie’s overseas family and sightsee.
