

Alice Mary (Seymour) Welch was born in Baldwin Park, July 4, 1920, the youngest and only daughter of her parents, John and Mary Seymour. Alice had three older brothers, Edward, Arthur, and Owen Seymour, all previously deceased. She grew up in Baldwin Park and graduated from Covina High School. After graduating from high school, Alice started RN training at Huntington Memorial Hospital. Alice enlisted in the Army and was deployed to the Philippines in Luzon. She served the last two years of WWII in a field hospital as a surgical nurse. She often mentioned stories that reflected the horror of war, as well as funny anecdotes like raiding the mess hall for fresh baked bread and jam after a shift in surgery or being served a large cockroach in her soup bowl. Alice returned to civilian life and worked as a surgical nurse in New York briefly then moved back to California. During her time working at Monrovia Community Hospital, Alice met her future husband, James Welch(introduced by her future mother in law). Alice and James(Jim) married and had three children-Kathleen, Colleen and James. After retirement, Alice and Jim moved to Running Springs, enjoying traveling and being with family and friends. Jim passed away in April 1994 and Alice continued on with her life in Running Springs, joining a quilting group and traveling with friends. She is survived by her three children, and two grandchildren, Jennifer Murray and Phillip Richardson. Three great grandchildren, Alexandra, Kyle and Kendyll. She has six great-great grandchildren, Tanner, Harper, Sawyer (Strawberry), Connor Logan, and Parker Morris as well as Jacquelyn Rose Poirier. she is also survived by her nephews Arthur and Richard Seymour . She was known to everyone as Grandma Alice. She will be missed for her love of life and sense of humor. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army, the DAV, or Friends of Upland Animal Shelter. Celebration of Life will be planned later when safe for gatherings.
