My mother was born in the state of Aguascalientes in Mexico on September 28, 1932. Even though her legal documents show her birthdate as October 6,1932, my family celebrates her birthday on September 28. She was baptized in the Catholic Church as Bertha Avila Torres.
My grandparents, her father Antonio Avila, and her mother Jesusita Torres, were both born in Tabasco, a region in the state of Zacatecas, Mexico. They worked hard seeking a better future and during the early 1920s my grandfather took advantage of an opportunity to work, in this country, in the farming industry. My grandparents, both in their early 20s, moved to the state of Colorado, where their first four children were born: Antonio, Mercedes, Jose and Elisa, all who already passed away. After Elisa’s birth, my grandparents moved to the state of Aguascalientes, Mexico, where my mother was born, and was the last of their 5 children. When my mother was very young my grandparents moved to the City of Zacatecas, capital of the state with the same name, where my mother lived all of her life as a single woman.
As soon as my grandparents arrived to the City of Zacatecas, they established a family business, a small grocery store, which was located in the center of the city. Their children assisted with the house chores and in the family business. The Avila Torres family was united and formed various friendships in their city of residence.
By the time my mother reached her adolescence, my grandparents had already established a comfortable economic status because their family business, as well as other enterprises, had grown, however, she still had the obligation to assist on the house chores and on the family business. It was during this decade of the 1940s that my mother gained an interest to continue studying and she took courses, such as ‘shorthand’ at a local academy. Her family, her duties, and studies were an important factor on her development. She held values, such as, her catholic faith, discipline, respect for others, and the desire to continue developing intellectually as an individual.
During her elementary school years she was struck by cupid and she noticed a young man who was only a few months older than her, named Enrique Nunez, whom she eventually married. Since the day of being struck by cupid until they formalized their relationship, my mother was courted by other young men and my father courted other young women. When they were both approximately 23 years old, they formalized their relationship. They got married on September 28, 1957, days before my mother turned 25 years old. The wedding was at Capilla de Napoles, located in the county of Guadalupe, Mexico.
My parents had 5 daughters and 3 sons. During their first years of marriage they lived in the city of Zacatecas where the twins, Alysia and Jorge Enrique, were born, followed by Jose Antonio and Veronica Margarita. During 1963 to 1966 my parents lived in Los Angeles County, California where Helena de Lourdes and Jesus Gerardo were born. In late 1966 my parents returned to the city of Zacatecas where Lorena and Celina were born.
During 1966 to 1979 my mother ran a grocery store, sold clothing among her friends and took care of her home (for example, she ensured all meals were prepared on time and dealt with matters regarding the well-being and education of her children). My father ran other businesses and would spend time working in this country. Various nieces and nephews, from my mother and from my father’s family, established a good relationship with my mother, whom they referred to as ‘Tia Bertha’. My mother enjoyed hobbies such as, yoga and reading. She was also an excellent cook and her dishes delighted her family and friends.
My parents moved back to this country during the year of 1979 and settled in Los Angeles County, California. My mother supported my father who had set a goal to establish his own construction business. During the year of 1982 my father reached his goal and from there on my mother continued taking care of her home. Their family continued to grow due to their childrens’ marriages.
Daughters-In-Law joined the family (Monica, Alicia and Silvia) as well as Sons-In-Law (Miguel Angel, Jorge Luis, Johnny and Tim).
Children were born: 10 grandsons (Nathan Jose, Jose Antonio, Andres, Juan Pablo, Edgar Gerardo, David Alejandro, Ricardo, David Jesus, Esteban and Daniel), 4 granddaughters (Michelle Alexia, Krizia, Viviana Xochitl and Ana Isabel), and 4 great-grandchildren (Juan Pablo, Ana Paola, Elizabeth Tulie and Feliciano).
My mother loved her family and she dedicated time to family participating in activities such as, attending birthday parties and graduations, engaging in conversations and playing cards games.
My mother established friendships through the years, of which several kept in touch with her until she aged. When my mother was very weak or sick many of her friends, as well as her nieces and nephews, would communicate with her children to inquire about her wellbeing.
During the last years of her life she spent a great deal of time at her home under the care of women and men, with kind hearts, who would help her with her daily needs, such as, preparing her meals, feeding her and bathing her. They also offered her companionship and love through engaging conversations and listening to music with her.
Now some of them are assisting my father who is 91 years old and suffers from dementia. My mother had a personality that complemented my father’s. She was typically the firm or strict one while he was the flexible one, which made them a good couple. My mother now rests peacefully knowing that her husband, the love of her life, is well taken care of.
Thank you God for all your blessings. May my mother rest in peace.
Nuestros padres tienen 5 hijas y 3 hijos.
Nacieron 10 nietos (Nathan José, José Antonio, Andrés, Juan Pablo, Edgar Gerardo, David Alejandro, Ricardo, David Jesús, Esteban y Daniel), 4 nietas (Michelle Alexia, Krizia, Viviana Xochitl y Ana Isabel), dos bisnietos (Juan Pablo y Feliciano) y dos bisnietas (Ana Paola y Elizabeth Tulie).
