Phyllis Clara Wells. Ed was the oldest of 4 and was known for being very
protective of his siblings and cousins. He described life in his hometown as being
"rough" so from his early childhood days, Ed dreamed of his escape from the
crime and violence he saw on the streets of South Chicago. Ed, therefore sought
becoming a man in uniform as his ticket to better opportunities. In 1970 when Ed
joined the Air Force, he was ecstatic to learn that he would spend the next 3
years stationed in Honolulu Hawaii.
In 1973, Ed received an honorable discharge from the Air Force and moved to
San Bernardino California where he began to manage rising talent in the music
industry including headline performer Evelyn Williams. Soon Ed and Evelyn
became a dynamic duo, landing a contract as the opening performer on tour with
the well known R&B Group the Jackson 5. However, it was unknown to Ed that
just a few days prior to signing the deal, Evelyn had resolved in her heart that
she was leaving the music industry to return to her religious upbringing as one of
Jehovah's Witnesses. While Ed felt that the Jackson 5 deal was a chance of a
lifetime, he realized that Evelyn was his real prize.
Ed married Evelyn in 1975, taking on the role not only has husband but step-
father to her 8 and 9 year old children Ray Jr. (June) and Stephanie Ann. While
June and Steph maintained a close bond with their biological father, Ed provided
well for them and both quickly referred to him as Dad causing their friends to
often ask "which one"? June and Steph finished school and began families of
their own. But before the dust could settle on their empty nest, Ed's son Aaron
Edward was born in 1985. Aaron recalls fun times with his Dad as Ed enjoyed
amusement park rollercoasters well into his adult life along with live music &
sporting events. Fewer things gave Ed more joy then a nice meal with his family,
enjoying some of his favorite things along with sweets. Steph & Aaron fondly
remember eating dessert after dinner every night.
Ed was employed for many years as a Boiler Room Mechanic until a work injury
forced early retirement. Meanwhile, he observed the faith and fine conduct of his
wife and appreciated the values that she instilled in the kids. In 2008 Ed made a
personal dedication to Jehovah God and got baptized. While health permitted, Ed
enjoyed Christian Meetings, Assemblies and Conventions with his family.
Those who have not preceded Ed in death include his wife Evelyn, Daughter
Stephanie (Joe) Son Aaron (Sara), Sister Yolanda, Cousin Rosita, Sisters-in Law,
Sandra (Paul), Joyce who always called him, "Brother in Law", Niece Marguerite,
Nephews Gabriel, Brandon & Corey, 7 Grandchildren and a host of Great
Grandchildren and Nieces and Nephews.
Ed will be missed by his family and all who knew and loved him until the day that
we see him again when "... many of those asleep in the dust of the earth will wake
up". Daniel 12:2
