Eston started school in a little one-room school house. One teacher taught every grade, first thru eight with a total of approximately 20 students. For some unknown reason (anyone's guess) he was promoted from the second to the fourth grade.
After graduation from Edgerton High School in 1935, he went to work for an oil company and furniture store. About this time, he saw what would become his first car. A 1931 Chrysler Roadster which he completely paid for. That took about a year and a half of weekly payments.
Leisure time was usually spent at a nearby lake for swimming and evening dancing in an outdoor pavillion which continued until he was drafted into the Army for one year of selected service. As a result of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, his one year lasted four years and nine months!
After Desert Training at Camp Young (between Indio and Blythe), under General Patton, Eston was sent to the East Coast. From there Eston was loaded on a troop ship which headed for the Invasions of Casablanca,Morocco, Sicily, Italy, Southern France, North to Munich, Germany and South to Saltzburg, Austria when the war ended.
After being discharged from the Army, Eston married his pre-war girlfriend, Lucile Kruse who fortunately was working for the Sinclair Oil Company at the time of their marriage. In as much as jobs were very hard to get due to all of the returning servicemen, Eston was lucky enough to also get a job with Sinclair Oil. Eventually, they were both transferred to Independence, Kansas, then to Joliet , Illinios where Eston contracted Polio at the age 34 resulting in paralysis in both legs. After nine months of Psychotheraphy in a small VA hospital, his doctors advised to move to a warmer climate such as Arizona or California. Obviously, they chose California! Eston amnd Lucile came here in 1952. Eston obtained employment at Dutton Cadillac in Riverside and Lucile started working for Southern Californioa Edison. Eston decided to go to work for Air Force Missile Progam and Later to the Federal Aviation Administration and remained until his retirement in 1986. Lucile retried a year later which allowed them to travel and pursue hobbies such as stamp and coin collecting ;as well as Eston's scale model automobile collection. In mid 2003, medical exams revealed Lucile had lung canser which brought Darlene Person into their lives to care for Lucile who passed away in December of 2005. Darlene has since stayed on to care for Eston.
