Gilbert Joseph Apodaca was born December 9, 1946 in Las Cruces, New Mexico to Modesto and Grace Apodaca. He has two brothers and one sister, Louie, Pat and Elaine. Gilbert met the love of his life, Rosalinda Esparza at Lincoln High School during his junior year in 1964. From that moment, Gilbert didn’t know it, but his greatest journey and love story began.
After 2 years in the United States Army, Gilbert returned home from Germany back into Rose’s arms. Shortly after his return, Gilbert and Rose where married on November 23, 1968. Gilbert was blessed with 4 beautiful children, Antonette, Gilbert, Anthony and David. A year after their 3rd child was born, Gilbert and Rose attended a Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend, November 16 - 18, 1979. This weekend would shape the life of their marriage, their children’s lives, and the lives of thousands of couples.
Shortly after attending their first weekend, Gil and Rose began presenting weekends and continued this ministry for over 39 years. During their tenure as team couple Gil and Rose held many leadership roles including, Section Leaders for Southern California (6 years), Area Leaders (4 years), and were selected by U.S. board to be a cadre team to present weekends for other leadership couples. Within their own community and across the country, Gil and Rose are seen as a shining example of a sacramental couple.
Gil not only served in the W.W.M.E. ministry, his love for our Lord and his sacrament lead him to be an Eucharistic Minister for over 30 years and, along-side Rose, served as a marriage prep team couple for over 30 years at three different parishes. Gil and Rose were recognized by the Bishop and the Diocese of San Bernardino for their 25 years of service to the church in 2004 with the Saint Bernardine Award.
Gil was also very successful in his professional life. In 1999, after 28 years of service in California Youth Authority Correctional Facility, Gil retired as Chief of Security.
If Gil wasn’t working or participating in ministry, you would find Gil playing poker or ping pong, two of his favorite hobbies. During his retirement, Gil began playing competitive ping pong again and won several medals at the Senior Olympics, including bronze, silver and gold in both individual and doubles.
If asked, Gil would say his greatest joy in life was the love of his life, Rose, his 4 children and 18 grandchildren. Gil’s love for his wife was unmeasurable. Gil wrote love letters to his wife, through their daily dialogue, everyday for the last 40 years. Gil was a faith-filled, devoted, passionate, playful, committed, gentle and loving man, hubby, best friend and partner to Rose.
Gil will be missed by all and will forever be remembered as a man of God.
