Jan Manaek Tua Hutauruk entered into rest, in Jesus, at his home in Loma Linda, CA on October 29, 2020. He was born in Tarutung, Sumatra Indonesia on August 16, 1927, the fourth of six children to Justin and Jenny Hutauruk. His siblings, older brother Constantinovel, sister Sofia, brother Nelson, sister Adelina and sister Heddy all preceded him in death. His eldest daughter Catherine Joy also preceded him in death after a five-year battle with breast cancer. Mr. Hutauruk received some formative education and training in Sipoholon, but always recognized the significance of the training for his baptism on May 19, 1947. He was able to serve as an instructor at an SDA school in Jakarta. Jan proposed to his future wife, Evelyn, in 1950, who at that time, also worked at the school, but was instructed by her father for both of them to pursue further education. Because of the support and prayers of his mother and his siblings, he was able to be accepted at Avondale College, Australia and received an undergraduate degree in Theology in 1958. He gained pastoring experience in Singapore in the late 1950's before his marriage to Evelyn Manullang, which was a 10-year wait. He and his wife settled in Penang, Malaysia, where he pastored the local church during the 1960's. During that decade, all three of his children were born at Penang Sanitarium (Penang Adventist Hospital). Because his wife was a nurse, which was much needed in the United States, his dream to go to America to live, work and study was realized in 1969. He continued his education at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, and was able to complete a M. Div., D. Div. and MBA during the 1970's, also becoming a citizen in 1976. One of the highlights for him at Andrews University was that he baptized all three of his children, with his mother present, at Pioneer Memorial Church. This reinforced the promise of his mother, who was raised in the Lutheran faith, to his father of growing and remaining within the SDA faith. In late 1981, he relocated his family to Loma Linda, California with the opportunity to apply for a new hospital administration program at Loma Linda University. However, the program closed with minimal explanation and work opportunities ended. Jan continued to place his trust in God's providential preparation for his future. He was able to purchase a home, assist his wife in finding a job at the VA Hospital, encourage and finance higher education for his children and stayed active volunteering in churches and the community where he remained for the rest of his life. Jan enjoyed traveling immensely, having driven a car and utilizing train travel through Europe in the 1970's and 1990's. After completing his doctoral program in the mid-1970's, he began to write and journal daily for almost 45 years, producing a vast volume of his daily thoughts in writing and essays, which he intended to be read by family and future generations. He loved his wife, family, friends and relatives with an imperfect love, as he used to say, but he valued the time he spent with them and the unique human qualities of each person he met. He continued to verbalize that the greatest gift he received was the SDA faith and message, passed down from his father and mother that provided and strengthened him throughout his life. He is remembered with affection by his wife Evelyn, daughter Rohannah and her husband Robert, Son Johannes and his wife Evie and five grandchildren, Joshua, Ian, Liona, Matthew and Allison Johanna, three sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. We look forward to the promise of being reunited with him and many loved ones when Jesus returns. A service reflecting Mr. Hutauruk's life will be at 10:00 AM, Friday, November 27, at Montecito Memorial Park and Mortuary outdoors, with nearby internment.
