Leila May Tate, born March 7, 1930 – was the embodiment of her life’s motto, “Simplicity with a Flair.” She was born in Montreal, Canada, the eldest daughter of two immigrant parents. Her mother, Rita (Monplaisir) Wallen, immigrated from St. Lucia, and her father, Joseph James Wallen, immigrated from Kingston, Jamaica. They had 4 girls, Leila, Diane (preceded in death), Thelma Josephine (preceded in death), and Shirley. Leila primarily worked as a hired domestic and her housekeeping skills were admired by all.
As a child, she overcame many health challenges. Her insecurities gave her an authentic humility and kindness that endeared her to many. She was true to herself, and always enjoyed a good laugh. Her love of roller-coasters, swings, skating, being on the backseat of a tandem bicycle, and even being open to learning how to snow ski well into her 60’s, kept her young at heart and full of life.
Her unique flair for life was evident in her dress and her “get up and go.” Never did she leave home without her color-coordinated bracelets and lipstick. She loved to travel and was happy to relive her adventures throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.
Leila’s love of reading was her greatest source of education. She was always informed on current events. She had a wealth of knowledge regarding birds, cats and dogs. Watching a good dog show was always one of her life’s pleasures. She enjoyed sports, especially the Olympics. She spent many years in bowling leagues, and definitely was a respectable bowler.
Her life left an indelible mark on those who had the chance to know her. More than anything, Leila will be remembered for her faith. As she said, she was "a Catholic to the end." She often shared that if she had it to do all over again, she would have been a nun. She loved a good Sunday mass and was never without her prayer beads. Her heart for God was steadfast and true throughout her life.
Leila transitioned from this life to eternity on January 3, 2022. She is survived by her sister, Shirley Moye, her nephews, Michael (wife Michelle), Marc (wife Karen), Steven, Joseph (wife Christine), Andre (wife Monique), and nieces Karen, Cassandra (husband Victor) Renee (husband Charles), and several great nieces, great nephews, and friends all over the world.
