I want to share a bit about the life of my mother, Maria Pena. Mami was much loved and well known for her humble service dedicated to the God she knew so well, and the family she loved so deeply. And as a pastor’s wife, she also worked tirelessly in many churches.
Mami possessed a practical faith based on miraculous personal encounters with God, countless hours of Bible reading and endless prayers, including daily petitions for each family member.
Mami was born October 26, 1926, in the tiny village of Popoyuapa in southern Nicaragua where she spent the first half of her life.
She was the 5th of 11 children born to my grandpa Marcos and grandma Elsa Castillo. The family was very poor, and Mami helped where she could. She once told us that as young child she would pick fruit to sell near the local mercado.
Mami’s heart was always focused on family. As she grew older, she assumed more responsibility helping to deliver things her mother made via walking, bicycle, bus, and horse-drawn carts.
Mami had a strong spirit and did not let life’s challenges keep her down. She matured into an attractive and hard-working young woman.
But it was the dashing and impulsive, Victor Pena (my Papi) who would redirect the ultimate course of her life. They met as young teenagers and became friends. Describing him decades later to a granddaughter, Mami smiled saying, “He was very good looking, caring and a hard worker.”
They were married in a civil ceremony in 1946. Then to earn a living, the young couple opened a small pulperia and cantina.
Out of their love, a first daughter, my sister Nora was born. In those early years, she was often sent to our grandma Elsa’s while my parents worked at their shop. The business made good money, but both Papi and Mami longed for something different.
So, seeking a better life, Papi ventured to the “banana zone” of Costa Rica, but rather than finding economic opportunity, he encountered the living Jesus Christ and immediately converted to Christianity.
After his life’s transformation, Papi return to Nicaragua, and in his typical style, he started evangelizing. Through his prayers and example, the Lord began to work in Mami’s heart, and she too, joyfully committed her life to serving the Lord.
But Mami soon learned that her conversion also had a cost, as she was cruelly persecuted by both family and friends. Many opposed her decision, but she remained faithful.
During this time, two more children were born to the family, Esperanza and their only son David. Sadly, the family experienced its first significant tragedy when David suddenly died as a toddler.
As he continued to grow in his new faith, Papi accepted God’s call to the pastorate and started attending a seminary run by US missionaries in San Jorge many kilometers away.
Mami too, felt God’s calling as she began the challenging spiritual journey of being a pastor’s wife. She helped Papi pastor and plant churches in Belen, San Ysidro, and Chinandega. Amid several moves and lots of church work, Mami also managed to give birth to 3 more daughters, Persida, Ogla and me
Mami often spoke about a miracle healing that occurred during this time. Young Persida had been working with her father when a heavy grinding stone fell on top of her. When the stone was lifted away, Papi and Mami held her crushed, limp body and passionately prayed for healing. The child stirred and coughed up blood. A missionary sister drove Mami and my sister to the hospital while Papi remained behind praying. He was still on his knees when they returned. Miraculously, Persida was completely healthy.
It seemed clear that hard work and dedication had paid off when Papi took the pastorate at the First Church of the Nazarene in Managua... But God once again tested the family’s faith in 1972 when a massive pre-Christmas earthquake devastated the city and destroyed the church.
Fortunately, we all escaped serious injury. During the evacuation my sisters and I were sent to our aunt in Popoyuapa, while Mami & Papi stayed for a few days. Because of the devastation, we could not return for many months. Mami soon joined us, but Papi stayed to help for the members of the church.
Along with the congregation, our family began the difficult task of rebuilding the church in a new location. After much work, an up-to-date facility was completed, and it still stands there today.
In 1978, Papi received a call to pastor a church in Albuquerque, NM. After much prayer and out of concern for our futures, Papi and Mami made the difficult decision to move to the US. Amid tears and hugs, the family boarded a bus for the long trip.
Tired and exhausted from the long bus ride the family reached the Mexico-US border, only to learn that the Albuquerque assignment had been switched. Papi was informed that he would pastor the Selma church in California’s fertile central valley 1500 kilometers away.
Adjusting to a new language and culture in the US was difficult for everyone especially us girls. But Mami always encouraged us to be strong. She would also cook our favorite foods like Gallo Pinto and fried plantains to help make our new home feel less foreign.
During this time, the family found itself moving every few years to a new church assignment. But in each new community Mami made friends, visited shut-ins with Papi and generously gave food, clothes, and money to those in need.
It was during these US church years that we daughters matured, married, and began raising our own families.
First born Nora, married Pastor Joel Ortiz in 1971. She was also the first to emigrate to the US and helped open the way for the rest of the family. She gave birth to Mami’s first grandchild, Melody. Then later two more daughters were born Debbie and Becky. Mami said that Nora was the daughter most like herself, adding, “She does everything with calmness.”
In 1977 Esperanza married David Guzman in Nicaragua. They later emigrated to the US where David studied and became a pastor in the Hispanic Church of the Nazarene. Their family provided Mami with three more granddaughters Keila, Fanny, and Carol. Of Esperanza, Mami said, “She has a strong character and is very attentive to people”.

Third daughter, Persida married Pastor Jorge Garcia in 1979. She gave Mami her first grandson, Vladimir. Persida’s children also included Arlene, Nogah, Jorge and Erick. Mami loved Persida’s playful nature and her ability to light-up any gathering by telling animated stories punctuated with her explosive laugh.
I married Thomas Shippee in 1987 and our family includes the youngest two grandchildren, Alex and David. For much of their later life, Papi and Mami lived with us at “Rancho Shipena,” a five-acre homestead in the San Bernardino mountains. Mami described me as having the character most like my father and said, “Hortencia likes things done her way.”
As the youngest daughter, Ogla always had a special place in Mami’s heart. She married Pastor Joe Holloway in 1989 and immediately became “Stepmom” to Joe’s three children Shane, Jeremy and Misty adding three more grandchildren to Mami’s life and prayers. Of Ogla, Mami said, “She has a cheerful disposition and is upright in all she does.”
When grandson Alex was born, Papi and Mami moved to Rancho Shipena. There they lived in their own small cottage where many crowded holiday gatherings included, laughing, singing, crying and gag gifts with hidden cash.
The Rancho afforded a park-like refuge for the family to gather, often eating barbecued carne asada. For the big 2008 reunion, everyone got a blue tee-shirt emblazoned with the ever-growing Pena family tree.
While the Rancho years were mostly joyful, they also included one of the family’s greatest tragedies. The shocking loss of Persida and Jorge in a car accident with a drunk driver. Mami was especially devasted as she lamented, “Your children are not supposed to die before you.” But turning to God and comforting Persida’s orphaned children, the entire family was ultimately able to find solace.
During the 25 years on the Rancho, many of the grandchildren matured, married, and started families themselves providing Mami with 24 great-grandchildren. Throughout the rest of her life, she made a great effort spending time with each of them, always teaching God’s word through her unconditional Abuelita love.
Even though she had become a naturalized US citizen, and loved life on the Rancho, Mami never forgot her homeland of Nicaragua. She and Papi took many trips with family back to Popoyuapa, Rivas and Managua fulfilling their duty to pass on the rich Central American heritage.
When Papi became ill; first with a stroke and then dementia, long trips to the doctor made life at the Rancho impractical. So, we moved to San Bernardino. There, Mami and we daughters cared for Papi often working in shifts to relieve one-another. Over two long years, Papi’s debilitating illness ultimately took his life. At the memorial, our family mourned with deep loss, but also great joy, knowing that he was finally with the savior he loved and served.
Mami loved working outside. Once she tore the tendon in her right shoulder. The doctors said surgery would be required if she was ever to raise her right hand above her waist. But Mami decided to trust God instead. After months of faithful exercise and lots of prayer, she miraculously regained full mobility to the complete befuddlement of her doctors.
With an increasingly fragile body, Mami’s activities moved inside and turned to quilting blankets she made for each of the family members and doing jigsaw puzzles. She often enlisted the aid of anyone who would help. She would sew or stand beside the puzzle table for hours at a time intently working with her arthritis gnarled fingers.
Thankfully, Mami’s passing did not linger. Her heart which had been so strong, seemed to just wear out. And she went home to be with the Lord on Aug. 16 in Clovis, CA where she had been visiting Ogla. But right to the very end, she maintained the strength and peace that marked her 95-year life. She spoke by phone and in person with many family members. She reminded them to live up to the Pena name by being “steadfast rocks” for God. And her final message always included a gospel call to seek and follow the Jesus she knew, served and loved so well.
Mita, “Thank you for your example and your love. All of us will miss you very much”.
