Michael was a proud lifelong resident of San Bernardino, born at Community Hospital on October 11, 1951, to Fred and Lou Gallegos. He was the middle son of three boys; older brother Sonny and younger brother Mark. As a child, his interest in playing drums first began. At 11 years old, his parents gifted him a drum set which he cherished and played throughout his life. He also enjoyed sports and the camaraderie of playing with friends in the neighborhood.
Michael graduated from San Bernardino High School (SBHS) in 1969 and then served in the U.S. Air Force (USAF) during the Vietnam Era at Edwards Air Force Base. After completing his military service, he graduated from California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB).
His career in the grocery industry lasted 36 years with Safeway/Vons, where he met Glenda, the love of his life. After a brief courtship of six months, they married on January 31, 1981, in Las Vegas. They shared 44 years together as husband and wife.
Together, Michael and Glenda raised two wonderful children, Keith and Erica. Family time was often spent camping, fishing, and sharing laughs around campfires. As a grandfather, Michael was adored by his grandchildren, Adelyn and Ethan, who fondly remember his legendary pancakes and their unique game, "Wake-up, Night-Night."
Known as "Coach Mike," he led numerous youth sports teams at Wildwood, Holy Rosary and Pacific High School, coaching baseball, softball, and basketball. Michael's adventurous spirit took him and Glenda on travels to the Caribbean, Pacific, and other global destinations. His hobbies included fishing in Green Valley Lake and Big Pine, camping, hiking, and running half-marathons. He was also an enthusiast of classic cars, participating with his 1964 Volvo in Route 66 events and local car shows. Music remained a constant in his life, with him drumming in several local bands.
Michael was known for his selfless lifestyle, always encouraging his family with the mantra, "We're all the best!" His example of love and generosity was unparalleled.
Michael shared a special secret with a select few about his remarkable luck at casinos, a mystery that will remain undisclosed. However, the true gift was the luck of having him in our lives.
