Sophia Celestine Hampton was born on August 6, 1930 in Saint Louis, Missouri to her loving parents Joseph and Mattie Mischeaux. She was raised alongside her four brothers James, Joseph, Thomas, and Louis Mischeaux, and older sister Rose Marie Micheaux-Banks. Sophia was the second youngest of the 6 children. Joseph and Mattie established a strong foundation for their children. A foundation composed of faith, love and loyalty. It was these characteristics that established the wonderful spirit of Sophia, which shined as brightly internally as displayed externally. She was a natural nurturer and she loved caring for others. She took these natural talents and beautiful spirit and entered the field of nursing. She worked in a small private practice in Missouri for Dr. Moore, pursuing her passion helping those in need. This beautiful and wonderful spirit caught the eye of a well-dressed gentleman with a love for jazz, Mr. James Edward Hampton Jr. He would be her great protector and life partner. The two fell in love and married on February 13, 1949. They started their lives together carrying on the same values established by Joseph and Mattie but adding on the value of their own family.
On August 11, 1950, James and Sophia welcomed their first child Brenda Maria Hampton. The two were now establishing their own legacy and their family continued to grow. In 1951, Sophia found out she was expecting their second child. Seeking to give their growing family a better life, James and Sophia decided to relocate to California in 1952. While traveling, an expecting Sophia gave birth to their second baby girl Marcia Denise Hampton in Cleveland, OH on April 4, 1952. (Proceeded in death) Caring for two beautiful girls did not keep Sophia from helping others in need, again demonstrating her generous nature. Once settled in California she worked for several nursing facilities, including Fountain View and Beverly Palm medical facilities, while also taking on private patients. By her side working as a carpenter James and Sophia continued to work hard and grow their legacy, welcoming a third child and first son Michael Edward Hampton on February 3, 1955. Enjoying their life’s journey and watching their three little ones brought James and Sophia great joy. They knew no matter what challenges may come their way the two of them created a firm foundation and they were passing on great values that would continue for generations to come…Loyalty.
The Hampton Legacy continued to flourish as the second son and fourth child of the Hampton legacy was welcome Kevin James Hampton, on April 5, 1958. While settling in in the West Los Angeles area of California new friendships were formed that would last a lifetime. James and Sophia continued to lead by example and shared these important values with their little ones. These values and love continued to thrive and were passed along as three additional children joined the legacy. Monica Alberta Hampton on March 1,1959, Natalie Diane Hampton-Redd on April 1, 1960, and one surprise arrival and final triumph for The Hampton Legacy the arrival of Marc Flynn Hampton on June 28, 1966. In the late 1970’s, The Hampton family relocated to Inglewood, Ca. It was here on the forever memorable “Beach Street” James and Sophia would get to see the demonstration of the values established, as the title of Grandfather and Grandmother were earned, and lifelong memories created. Steadfast, in her faith Sophia was a faithful member of Saint Jerome Catholic Church in Ladera Heights California. She taught the importance of standing on faith and the love of the Lord. She knew the love of the Lord would carry you through any storm and the importance of sharing these characteristics with others. In 1984 the Lord called home Sophia’s loving husband James Edward home. The values and foundation established by the two loves allowed Sophia to stand firm and continue to guide her family and legacy…faith.
In the late 1980’s Sophia took on a private nursing job caring for her dear friend Donald Jackson. She decided to relocate to Riverside county to continue to care for Don in the early 1990’s. Donald would be Sophia’s last patient. Once the Lord called her dear friend home Sophia retired. Not skipping a beat, she continued to support, guide and love her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and Great-great grandchildren. Settling in a small retirement community in Jurupa Valley, she continued to enjoy her life’s journey, standing firm on her faith, demonstrating loyalty and love. She continued sharing the values that established a strong foundation, watching The Hampton legacy blossom for ninety-two years. On March 29, 2023, the Lord called our eternal angel home.
