God lovingly brought Vernon A. Macarewa into the world on June 4, 1933 to Zacheus and Stien Macarewa in Singapore. He was the middle child of three, with siblings Gladys and Fred. Vernon grew up and attended school for his primary grades at Malayan Seminary in Upper Serangoon Road in Singapore. In 1941, the Macarewa family fled to Sipogu, North Sumatra due to the dangers of World War II. And it was during 1943 to 1945 when the family faced hardships, being brought to interment camps in Simanunggang and Martinggan, Sumatra. But by the grace of God, the Macarewa family was sheltered in the American Camp in Padang, West Sumatra from 1946 to 1948. From 1948 to 1954, Vernon attended middle and high school in Kawangkoan, North Celebes and furthered his education by attending SDA Junior College in Bandung, West Java from 1954 to 1956. Great happiness, joy, and love were felt in July 1956 when Vernon married his late wife, Anna Londa. Teaching was a passion for Vernon and he was able to share his passion with his students at NSTS Marboba, Pematang Siantar in Sumatra from 1956 to 1959, and in Perguruan Tinggi Advent in Cisarua, Bandung from 1959 to 1964. It was during that time that Vernon and Anna brought three lovely children into the world: David, Aimee, and Andrew. From 1964 to 1970, Vernon and his family moved to the Philippines where he continued his education in Philippines Union College and also in the University of the Philippines, both in Manila. Vernon continued to teach from 1970 to 1976 at Institut Teologia & Keguruan Advent (ITKA) when the family moved back to Cisarua, Bandung. Then from 1976 to 1979, he was called to share his enthusiasm with education in Bangkok, Thailand, at Ekamai Adventist School. After what was initially just a visit, Vernon and his family settled in California where he worked at Carmichael International Services as a Customs Broker. Although sadness ensued when Anna passed away, Vernon found love again when he married his surviving wife, Kitty Walean, in September of 1986, and welcomed to his family brood, Kitty’s son, Iwan. Vernon also received many blessings with the birth of his seven grandchildren: Brittanee, Bethanee, Byron, Jonathan, Brandon, Benjamin, and Zoe. And it was in the year 2008, when Vernon retired and happily enjoyed traveling around the world and going on cruises, making pictorial memories with his camcorder and camera always slung on the his shoulder. On Tuesday, April 19, 2011, our Heavenly Father lovingly allowed Vernon Macarewa to be brought to rest at home surrounded by loved ones. Vernon leaves behind many beloved memories shared with his wife, children, grandchildren, and family and frie
