Alonzo Aloysius Burke Jr.

Alonzo "Bubby" Burke, of Columbia, Maryland, passed away at home on Friday, November 11, 2022 at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Ena Nielsen Burke, and his son Derek Peter; his older sisters and their husbands, Shirley Lee (Harvey), Geraldine Alves (Pagent), Velma Johnson (Bill), one sister-in-law, Faye Burke, and brother-in-law, Robert Sneed. He is survived by three of his children, Arnis Boschulte, Kyle Burke, and Nelia Talley (Ronald); one sister, Alonzella "Billie" Sneed, and one brother Wallace Burke; a host of grandchildren, great[-grands, nieces, nephews, cousins, and caring friends and neighbors. Alonzo grew up in Washington, DC with his father and mother (Alonzo and Annie Burke), and five siblings. He attended Armstrong Vocational High School and joined the US Coast Guard during the second World War serving in the Carribean where he met and married his wife. He was a Golden Gloves participant and always loved watching boxing matches. He also enjoyed music especially jazz. He played the piano and taught music to children at the Howard community College. He was in a bowling league that traveled to competitions across the country. Photography was another one of his hobbies. The plays at Arena stage were always something he looked forward to attending. He was a great Bid Whist card player. He retired from his life's work as CEO and owner of Major Construction Company in DC.

Relatives and friends are invited to viewing Sunday, November 27th from 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm at Witzke Funeral Homes, Inc., 5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia, Maryland 21045. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Johns Catholic Church in the Village of Wilde Lake, 10431 Twin Rivers Road, Columbia, Maryland, 21044 on Monday November 28th at 9:30 am, followed by burial at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery 11501 Garrison Forest Road Owings Mills, Maryland 21117.
