Al was educated in St. Louis Public Schools and was a graduate of Sumner High School where he sang in the chorus.
An accomplished arbiter and proponent of equity and fair treatment for workers, he began his professional career working in the Swift Slaughterhouse in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1967 he moved his family to Chicago, Illinois and began working with the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America. In 1979 he moved his family to Columbia, Maryland and pursuant to the founding of the UFCW, began working out of the international headquarters in the Food Processing and Packinghouse where he assisted local unions throughout the country in a fight to secure worker justice and improve the lives of working families. Al retired in 1993, as Executive Assistant in the FPPM Division.
Al was a family man. Married for sixty-five years to his wife, Gloria, with whom he enjoyed travel, family gatherings and telling stories. He was preceded in death by daughter Christine, brother Carl and sisters Connie and Lucille. In addition to Gloria he is survived by his children Patricia Allen (Ed), Angela Marie Williams (Dennis) Judith Palmer Coleman, Alvin Jr.(Christyne), seven grandchildren, Whitney Gray, Jillian Riggs(Daniel), Dennis Williams II, Stephen Williams, Myles Williams, Asha Vincent and Jesse Neff; and seven great grandchildren Brandi, Ta’Miya, Zorah, O’rien, Janai, Devyn and Jace; bonus daughter Lynda Euell-Taylor(Kevin); sister in law Juanita Vincent, nephews, nieces, and a host of cousins.
Known for the exceptional care of his lawn, his expertise with a barbecue grill, and his love for golf, Al will truly be missed by his family, his neighbors, friends, and those for whom he advocated. A memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family invites donations be made to any charity of your choice in Al’s memory.
