

Arvind was born on January 14, 1951 to Rathnakara and Susheela Kini in Mattar, India. He married Mridula Sharma on February 28, 1979 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Together they raised four children: Rohini, Nutan, Seema and Ashvin.
An award-winning and renowned scientist, Arvind received degrees from the University of Mysore (1969) and the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (1971) before completing a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1979. He worked as a staff scientist in the Chemistry and Materials Science Divisions at Argonne National Laboratory for 16 years before joining the Materials Sciences and Engineering Division of the U.S Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Basic Energy Sciences in 2002. He retired from DOE in 2016.
Together with his wife Mridula, Arvind enjoyed travel, bird-watching and Hindustani and Carnatic classical music. He was an avid nature and portrait photographer and he chronicled the lives of his wife and family with love and care.
In addition to his wife and children Arvind is survived by his granddaughters Bianca and Karina, whom he loved deeply, and a large extended family in the United Kingdom and India.
