Georg was born in Dusseldorf, Germany on September 16,1936 to Georg Karl Gottfried Bartels and Agnas Engels Bartels.
He grew up working in a restaurant his parents owned. He attended university in Dusseldorf, studying metallurgy and science. He came to the United States of America in 1958 and served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962. Georg had his only child, Trudy, at age 40. She was the apple of his eye, as he had waited so long to have a child of his own.
Georg landed his dream job at Carnegie Institution of Science in Washington, DC in the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism. He designed and made an instrument that collects data of the activity of the earth's plates. He retired from Carnegie at age 69.
Georg was a happy man who loved the outdoors, the beach, biking, motorcycling, hiking, and especially watching international soccer. He enjoyed traveling and taking pictures. He loved eating out at restaurants, partly because he grew up in one, and also because he did not like cooking and cleaning. He enjoyed helping people and making crazy jokes. Finally, he enjoyed attending church and spending time with friends. His favorite color was yellow.
He is survived by his daughter Trudy, (John) Encisco and his grandchildren Robert, Autumn, and Thaddaeus of Marietta, GA. He is also survived by his companion Esther Ghazi of Columbia, MD.
A receiving of friends for George will be held Monday, November 29, 2021 from 10 am to 11 am at Witzke Funeral Homes Inc., 5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia, MD 21045, where a service will begin at 11am. The burial will follow at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
