George F. Kenter passed away on June 19, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, to George Joseph and Loretta Regina Kenter. George graduated from Quigley High School and went on to attend Mundelein Seminary. After completing his studies, he joined the U.S. Army.
George dedicated much of his professional life to public service as a long-time employee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He began his career in Buffalo, New York, as an inspector, later transferring to the New York office in the same role. There, he was promoted to Food and Drug Officer, where he reviewed cases and ensured regulatory compliance. Eventually, George moved to FDA headquarters in Rockville, Maryland, where he spent the majority of his career as a Compliance Officer in the drug division, reviewing drug cases and making critical recommendations until his retirement.
While in Buffalo, George met the love of his life, Reta. They shared 57 wonderful years together before her passing. Their bond was one of deep devotion and enduring love.
Among George’s favorite pastimes were cheering on the Chicago Cubs, traveling with Reta, and exploring historical sites across the country. He was blessed with a rich basso voice and found great joy in singing bass in choirs and vocal groups in Buffalo, New York City, and Columbia, Maryland. He was a proud member of the madrigal group Camerata Musica in Columbia, performing in nursing homes and other venues well into his 70s. Each year, he invited friends to enjoy Camerata’s performances at the Renaissance Festival in Crownsville.
George’s mastery of history and theology was second to none. His lifelong passion for learning made him a gifted storyteller, often sharing memorable anecdotes from his years in government service and musical pursuits, as well as his thoughtful perspectives on politics and current events. He frequently expressed gratitude for the many patient and experienced FDA supervisors and colleagues who shaped his career, and he often recommended the FDA as a rewarding path for those interested in public service.
After Reta’s passing, George continued to live in Columbia, Maryland, where he remained active and social, often enjoying meals and conversations with friends at the Columbia Mall.
George will be deeply missed by his many friends and relatives, who will remember him for his wit, warmth, and wisdom.
A visitation for George will be held Sunday, July 6, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Witzke Funeral Homes Inc., 5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia, MD 21045.
